08:30 AM: I’m up.

09:00 AM: Facebooked and blogged.  Friend count: 280.  Facebook Page fan count: 52.

11:55 AM: Talked with [Emmy].  Apparently she keeps receiving bills from her former telephone and Internet provider; though she cancelled her subscription with them back in March, 2010.  I’ll look over her papers on this shortly, and see if we can figure what’s going on.

12:00 PM: Packing for trip to the   WPSBC Alumni Association   convention is done.

01:00 PM: Just met with our financial planner.  Looking into a reverse mortgage.

01:20 PM: Watched the 2010-07-11 episode of   CBS’s Face The Nation   news show on the DVR.

02:15 PM: Cooked a bottom round steak, mushrooms, and onions for lunch with fresh cucumbers and dressing.  Yum!

03:55 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   on the DVR.

04:15 PM: [Mentat's] sister just came.  She’s driving me to the Amtrak train station in Tyrone, where I’ll board the west-bound train to Pittsburgh and the   WPSBC Alumni Association   convention this weekend.  I’ll return home early should Mom’s condition degrade.  But she seems relatively stable at the moment and we have noted some slight improvements even.  So I believe that she’ll be alright while I’m gone.

04:55 PM: We just climbed onto the train and got seats together.  I sat closest to the window this time; I enjoy those ever-changing sights whizzing by; everything to farms and forests to city lights and roads and buildings taller than the trees.  Our coach is well air-conditioned as it usually is.

06:30 PM: We’ve passed Johnstown and so far, we’ve gabbed the whole trip about everything from [Mentat's] upcoming move to Ohio to my plans to buy Mom’s house.  It’s nice chatting with [Mentat].   I wish we did it more.  But if we did that, it might lose some of its appeal.  So maybe I don’t wish this.  I don’t know.  :-)

08:30 PM: I’m here a [Emmy's] now.  [Mentat] and I rode the train over and now we’re just gabbing while getting ready to head to Pizza Pronto for supper.

10:00 PM: We’re back at [Emmy's].  Mmmmm.  The pizza was spectacular.  Now we’re watching   CNN’s AC 360   news show and whipping up a bowl of raspberry cream cheese Jello.  I brought three Corelleware bowls with me so [Emmy] can make this Jello dish by herself.  She bought Jello and cream cheese at her shopping trip earlier today.

11:45 PM: After watching   KDKA TV’s Local News at 11:00 PM, we played some music on [Emmy's] computer from the group   Shiny Toy Guns; their version of the  Major Tom   song, originally done by   Peter Schilling.  We found that they also did a remake of  Blue Oyster Cult‘s hit   I’m Burnin’ For You.  Both remakes we like.  Both of these make great repeater songs.

12:00 AM: We’re heading to bed now that I’ve got blankets laid out on [Emmy's] living room floor for she and I, and she’s put new sheets on her bed for [Mentat].  So enjoy your night and I’ll write more as time permits tomorrow and over the weekend.  Good night.

09:00 AM: Facebooked and blogged.  Friend count: 276.  Facebook Page fan count: 51.

09:15 AM: Talked with sister Mary Ann.  She gave me an update on Mom’s progress at the hospital.  Details   here.

10:45 AM: Talked with [Emmy].  She’s missing being here among our family.  But she’ll be back in less than a month.  In the meantime, we’ll just keep talking on the phone.

12:30 PM: I completed my treasurer’s report for the upcoming  WPSBC Alumni Association   convention, and now I’m sending a copy to [Tad] so that he can present it in my place, should I be unable to attend due to Mom’s circumstances.

01:40 PM: Watched the 2010-07-06 episode of   Dr. Phil   on the DVR.

03:00 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   on the DVR.

04:45 PM: Watched the 2010-07-06 and 2010-07-07 episodes of   NBC’s Nightly News   on the DVR, and skipped the 2010-08-03 retun episode of   Dr. Phil.

05:20 PM: Heading up to the hospital to visit Mom.  Back later.

08:00 PM: I’m back home.  I’ll update the   Mom’s Status: 2010-08-04   with the current information presently.

10:30 PM: Posted the   Is Homosexuality Genetic?   piece to the   Tom’s Views   blog.

11:00 PM: Changed bed linens in my room and put two three baskets of clean clothes in Mom’s bedroom.  Hopefully she’ll come home soon to fold them.  Well, I’ll probably fold them.  But only she knows where they go.  So putting them away will have to wait until she returns.

11:45 PM: Watched the 2010-07-08 and 2010-07-09 episodes of   NBC’s Nightly News   on the DVR.

12:30 AM: Read more of the   Frankenstein   book.

05:45 AM: I’m up.

06:15 AM: Facebooked and blogged.  Friend count: 275.  Facebook Page fan count: 51.

06:45 AM: I may not attend the   WPSBC Alumni Association   convention this weekend with Mom so ill.  So I talked to a friend in Pittsburgh to see if she’d allow [Mentat] to sleep on her couch Thursday night before the convention.  She said that she would, except that her couch was already spoken for by another alumnist, who will also be coming to Oakland on Thursday.  However, she gave me a few other suggestions, and I’ll call those folks presently.

07:15 AM: Created audio journal episode   AJE-2010-08-03-06-29   in which I mostly recorded thoughts and medications about Mom, her current hospitalization, and how lousy I’m going to feel if she passes away.

07:20 AM: I’m going back to bed for a while.  I’m still sleepy, as I probably didn’t sleep very well last night; feeling worried and sad for Mom and all.

10:30 AM: I’m back up again.

12:00 PM: If I end up not going this weekend,  [Tad]   says that   [Mentat]   can stay with him on Thursday night.

12:15 PM: In talking with my sister this morning along with some folks in Pittsburgh, I’m leaning back toward attending the   WPSBC Alumni Association  convention this weekend.  Since as all use cell phones, I would quickly get the word should Mom take a turn for the worse, and get on the next train or bus home.  Plus, with Mom sleeping so much of the time, she probably wouldn’t miss me if I am gone for a few days. I’ll decide for sure whether or not I’m going on Thursday morning.

02:55 PM: Watched the 2010-06-27 and 2010-07-04 episodes of CBS’s   Face The Nation   news show on the DVR while writing out bill payments.

03:55 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   on the DVR.

04:15 PM: Leaving for the hospital now, to visit Mom.

07:00 PM: I’m home again.  See the    Mom’s Status: 2010-08-03   post for details of today’s visit.

10:00 PM: Talked with [Emmy] to chase the blues about Mom away for a while.

10:40 PM: Read more of the  Frankenstein   book; chapter 21 tonight.  I’ll read this and following ones again with [Emmy] when she next visits here.

12:15 AM: Spent the last hour or so looking through Mom’s photo albums; paying particular attention to pictures of her.  I miss her.

12:20 AM: Bed time.  So good night, take care, and look for more prose here tomorrow.

08:30 AM: I’m up.

11:15 AM: Facebooked for a bit, and in the process, wrote the   Driving While Using Cell Phones   piece for the   Tom’s Views   blog.

02:00 PM: Updated [Emmy's] copy of my important computer files and returned the hard drive to her.  Friends provide a handy way of keeping backups of my computers “off site.”

02:40 PM: [Emmy] and I walked to Sheetz for some steak subs for lunch and to get some money from the ATM for [Emmy's] trip.

03:45 PM: Nephew Garrett arrived to take [Emmy] to the train back to Pittsburgh.

04:15 PM: We departed for the Altoona train station.

05:20 PM: We escorted [Emmy] onto the train and said good bye.

06:00 PM: I’m back home again.  Now, I think I’ll Facebook for a while.

07:00 PM: Added more content to the   Driving While Using Cell Phones   piece for the   Tom’s Views   blog.

07:55 PM: Watched the 2010-05-23 rerun episode of CBS’s   60 Minutes   news show on the DVR.

08:10 PM: Skipped the 2010-05-30 and 2010-0t6-13 rerun episodes of CBS’s   60 Minutes   news show.  I’ve seen these already.

09:30 PM: Spent an hour repairing broken links on the   Tom’s Diary   blog.

11:30 PM: Recorded audio journal episode   AJE-2010-08-01-22-14

12:55 AM: Skimmed the 2010-06-27 rerun episode of CBS’s   60 Minutes   news show, and watched the story on the Avitar movie.

01:00 AM: Skipped the 2010-07-11 rerun episode of CBS’s   60 Minutes   news show although I did enjoy Andy Rooney’s piece about all the papers and other memorabilia that he keeps but never looks at.   He gives me a chuckle every week, even in reruns.

01:20 AM: Skipped the 2010-07-18 rerun episode of CBS’s   60 Minutes   news show although I did enjoy Andy Rooney’s piece about all the kitchen tools he keeps but never never uses.   Again, makes me chuckle every week, even in reruns.  :-)

01:28 AM: Skipped the 2010-07-25 rerun episode of CBS’s   60 Minutes   news show although I did enjoy Andy Rooney’s call to the medical establishment for an anti-desire pill.   Hmmm.  Perhaps Andy is a Buddhist.

01:40 AM: Skipped the 2010-08-01 rerun episode of CBS’s   60 Minutes   news show although I did enjoy Andy Rooney’s talk about his love of the newspaper.

03:30 AM: After debating this issue on Facebook for a couple hours, I added more content to the   Driving While Using Cell Phones   piece for the   Tom’s Views   blog.

03:35 AM: Now I’m heading to bed.  Though I should have been in there three hours ago, sometimes when a debate like the cell phone one heats up, I just can’t cool it down until I get so tired that I can’t think straight.  But I’ve reached that point now.  So I’d best get some rest, before I end up saying stupid things.  Besides, I want to be fully rested while visiting Mom tomorrow.  So good night and I’ll pick this up in less than ten hours.  Take care.

09:30 AM: I’m up.

10:00 AM: Made today’s batch of cream cheese Jello.  Today’s flavor: Peach.

11:00 AM: iPodded and Facebooked.

12:00 PM: The program director for the   WPSBC Alumni Association’s    convention this year called to instruct me to send out one refund check to a member who paid to attend the weekend, but then decided not to come.

01:30 PM: Heading to a friend’s house for an afternoon of swimming and great conversation.  Back later.

02:15 PM: [Emmy] and I walked to that friend’s place, which is a couple miles from here.  When we arrived, we lounged in her enclosed patio for a bit.  She introduced us to her grandson, and then the two of them immediately began ragging on president Obama.  Wishing to avoid a heated debate, both [Emmy] and I held our tongues pretty well actually.  However, I did speak up when they talked of deporting all illegal aliens, and they did agree that perhaps deportation was not the answer given the contribution that these aliens make to our economy here in the US.  After that discussion, things remained pretty tranquil.  We all agreed that the current political problems require a far more inclusive answer than either party can provide on its own.

02:30 PM: We talked of the local Lions Club and the vast numbers of members that have left in the past couple years.  We know why.  but I’ll not discuss it further at this time.  I got out last month and I’m into other more pleasing things now, and for the moment, that’s all that really matters to me.

03:00 PM: Then, we headed into the pool.  Gosh the water was frigid, and it did not get much warmer once we got used to it either.  :-)   But we did flloat around in it for nearly an hour and a half.

04:30 PM: We then sat in the grass, in the sunshine, smelling the clorene from the pool and our wet bathing suits too.  That’s a pleasant summer aroma.  Then, our friend gave us a large squash to take home for supper.  I never cooked one of these before.  But Pearl says that you can just slice it up, dip the slices in beaten eggs, and fry them up in a little oil.  Sounds easy enough.  So I’ll try it.  I’m getting hungry already.

05:15 PM: We’re headed home. Pearl volunteered to drive us, and, reasoning that we had already burned off enough of the pizza calories we consumed yesterday during the walk up here, we accepted her generous offer.

05:30 PM: We’re back home, and supper preparations are underway. I’m frying up some squash and baking some chicken breast, seasoned with buffalo sauce.

07:00 PM: Supper’s done and we’re just getting cleaned up after swimming.

08:45 PM: Watched much of  the 2010-07-23 episode of   KDKA TV’s Pittsburgh Today Live   variety show from the DVR.

11:20 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless,  but skipped today’s episode of   Dr. Phil.  It’s a rerun where Dr. Phil conducts a drug intervention for a young adult.  I’ve seen so many of these now that I quickly grow bored with them.  They’re necessary, yes.  But since I’ll probably never conduct one myself or even write about one, it seems like it would be a waste of my time to watch this one, as I’ve already seen several before. Now, [Emmy] is watching the 2010-07-27 episode of  KDKA TV’s   Pittsburgh Today Live    variety show. They supply many tips for healthy cooking that she enjoys hearing about.

12:15 AM: So ends another day, and less than ten hours, I’ll begin a new one.   So look for more posts tomorrow.  Good night.

11:45 AM: Revised approximately 200 posts on the   Tom’s Love Quest   blog, to include links to my home page and my full name.

01:30 PM: Heading to DelGrosso park for an afternoon / evening of good food, great rides, and wonderful fun over all.  Back later.

02: 15 PM: Got a couple of steak sandwiches at Merf’s Kitchen in the park for lunch.  Now, we’re going to the water park.  Mom is having problems breathing after the short walk from the parking area to Merf’s.  I’m concerned.  But she says she’s alright.

05:45 PM: We hung out at the water park throughout the afternoon.  The sun blazed, and we could find no shade.  So we spent nearly a half-hour of all that time rubbing on sunscreen; two or three applications every hour or so.  Yep.  Shade was a premium today.  We rode the water slides seven times and got drenched by the Mountain Dew bucket twice.  Then in the same wading pool area, they had various fountains and little geysers that we stood underneath to cool off when the sun got too hot.  Now, we’re going over to the main park for some supper and rides.

08:00 PM: We came back across Pleasant Valley Boulevard and rode the gas-powered DelGrosso go carts.  They go amazingly fast for such little cars.  Unfortunately, [Emmy] and I could not ride one together, as each car only has one seat.  So [Emmy] waited on the sidelines while I drove one.

10:00 PM: We’re home and heading to the shower to get the layers upon layers of sunscreen off.  :-)

01:15 AM: Watched the past two days worth of    The Young and the Restless   on the DVR.

09:00 AM: I’m up.

09:45 AM: Starting the beef + grain soup in a few minutes.  First, I’ll brown seven or eight pounds of stew meat, then, throw the grains, onions and the beef into the roaster and let it cook all day.  The roaster in this scenario serves as a gigantic crock pot.  By this evening therefore, we should have eighteen quarts of delicious soup / stew to eat.  Yum!

10:40 AM: All beef cubes have been browned with Mom’s assistance,  and added to the roaster along with the grain, onions, and salt.  We’ll put in the beef bouillon cubes later.  Gee, I hope that five pounds of grains won’t expand excessively.  But, just in case it overflows the roaster while cooking, I have several additional big pots standing by into which to scoop the excess.  I’ll check the progress of the stew every hour or so throughout today.

02:20 PM: The grains are tender now and have absorbed quite a bit of water.  But we only experienced a small overflow, which we ate for lunch.  :-)   now I’m allowing the roaster to cool for a couple hours before spooning the grain stew into freezer containers.

05:15 PM: Well I did use an extra slow cooker, because as folks on Facebook suspected, the grains really “exploded” in the last hour or so. Perhaps next time, I’ll use 4 pounds of grains instead of 5.  Also, the grain stew has been packed in freezer containers and carried downstairs to the ice box. Now I’m just cleaning up the roaster and slow cooker, and the pan we fried the beef in.

06:00 PM: Cleanup from the grain stew project is complete.

07:00 PM: Watched   KDKA TV’s Local News at 6:00 PM

09:00 PM: Talked with [Ron], who has just returned from camp.  He filled us in on how everything was.  He said that few campers liked the shorter session (by one day in fact), but that they made the best of it and enjoyed themselves.  No long hikes this year — only a two-mile one.  They missed my music.  But [Rick] filled in, in my absence.

[Ron] said he disagreed with many of my reasons for not going, and he seemed genuinely disappointed that I did not attend.  I explained the two nasty encounters I had with [Prism], and how I didn’t like watching the camp experience slowly but certainly erode right before my eyes.  He understood, I think, but even after a twenty-minute monologue in my defense, I still got the impression that he didn’t consider my reasons sufficient for opting out of camp this year.  Well, to each, his own I guess.

The truth is that he need not understand.  But I understand, and I’m the one that I must please ultimately.  But I’ll see [Ron] at the alumni convention in August, and that seemed to make him happier.  Hopefully he was not insulted at my decision to skip camp.

10:40 PM: [Emmy] and I read more of the   Frankenstein   book.

11:35 PM: Watched KDKA TV’s Local News at 11:00 PM, but we’re headed to bed now.   Enjoy your evening and look for more of my story tomorrow here at   Tom’s Diary.   Good night.

06:00 AM: I’m up.

07:15 AM: The drain stopper in the bath tub has broken; it’s gotten loose such that turning it to the right does not tighten it.  So I’ll take the entire drain assembly out to see what’s gone wrong.  Something probably corroded or something.  But I’ll do that later; once we get back from [Emmy's] doctors appointment.

07:30 AM: [Emmy] reports that her wrist is not hurting at all this morning, and she is unable to make it hurt by doing any of the exercises that induced pain in previously.  Grrrrrr.  Of course, on the day of her appointment with the orthopedic surgeon, it stops hurting.  She’s now carrying bags of groceries around the house along with weights in her book bag in an effort to reproduce the problem.

08:30 AM: Heading out now, for [Emmy's] doctors appointment and to do some   shopping.  Back later.

08:40 AM: We heard Mom’s cell phone beeping, somewhere in the car.  That’s good.  At least it’s not lost.  I’ll re activate it when I return home.

10:00 AM: The orthopedic doctor ordered a new set of nerve conduction tests.  He was unable to re create the wrist pain that [Emmy] has experienced almost non stop.  He also says that she may have been misdiagnosed but with good reason, won’t commit to a diagnosis until the aforementioned tests are run in early August.  The appointment has been scheduled at a hospital in Pittsburgh for these tests.

11:30 AM: Shopping   at Wal Mart complete, and we picked up Mom’s latest batch of meds from her pharmacy as well.

12:30 PM: Mom, when asked if she knew how the bath tub drain plunger came to be broken, said that she slipped while taking a shower this morning.  Fortunately, she was not hurt.  But the drain assembly requires replacement.  So, we stopped at Lowe’s to get the necessary hardware.

01:00 PM: We all ate lunch near Lowe’s; cheese steak sandwiches for all.  Yum.

01:20 PM: We’re home again and all groceries bought on   today’s shopping trip  have been put away.  But since we enjoyed a big lunch at Dominick’s in front of Lowe’s, we’re going to delay the buffalo flavored chicken breasts until tomorrow.

02:00 PM: Reactivated Mom’s cell phone on Verizon’s web site.

02:15 PM: We considered going swimming again today at the Bellwood pool.  But as I got a little sunburn  yesterday, and since [Emmy] is feeling tired from not enough sleep last night, we decided instead to stay home and nap, and to that nap we go…

04:00 PM: I’m awake again.

06:00 PM: The customer stopped by to pick up laptop, per the   Laptop Shuts Off: 2010-07-15   project.

06:45 PM: Rinsed out our 18 quart roaster, and lots of reusable and seal-able single-portion containers.  Preparing to make a big batch of beef grain soup tomorrow.

08:50 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   on the DVR.  However, we skipped today’s rerun episode of   Dr. Phil

09:15 PM: Facebooked throughout today.  Friend count: 267.  Official Facebook page fan count: 44.

10:00 PM: Watched bits and pieces of   KDKA TV’s   Pittsburgh Today Live   on the DVR.  But as tired as we both are due to the early rising this morning, the shopping, and the domestic work, we’re foregoing reading any more of the    Frankenstein    book tonight.  Instead, it’s to bed with us.  So have a great evening and I’ll add more to this story tomorrow.  Good night.

Log

10:30 AM: I’m up.

12:30 PM: [Emmy] and I walked outside to the benches in the south yard and basked in the intense sunshine.  Air temperatures are in the mid 70s but the sun rays are quite warm.

02:15 PM: Heading to the Bellwood swimming pool for an afternoon of hot fun in the summer.  Back later.

04:40 PM: We swam and floated around in the water for two hours with a little break for snacks after the first sixty minutes.  Great weather, with temperatures in the low 80s and the humidity low as well.  The remodeled pool looks nice with a bright blue interior with a row of deep but vibrant blue tiles running around the entire top edge.  The shape of the pool remains the same (L shape) and they kept the 12-foot section.  However, there are now no diving boards (too much of a liability I suspect).  The bath house layout is the same — no doubt still the same building; just the colors of the walls are now blue whereas in the 1970s, they were a pale yellow.  No jukebox for tunes.  But someone brought a boom box that, surprisingly, could be heard throughout the entire pool area.  Not as many trees around for shade, I noticed.  But all the grassy areas where I spent hours laying out still accompany that old and familiar, basic layout of the swimming area.  Now, we’re leaving for supper.

06:30 PM: We then walked into downtown Bellwood and enjoyed a steak Stromboli at Brothers Pizza.

06:45 PM: Afterwards, we visited Hometown Market and bought some cream cheese for our Jellow dessert we’ve come to love.

07:00 PM: We’re back home and getting showers, to wash the sunscreen from our hair and bodies.

09:00 PM: Watched today’s episodes of    The Young and the Restless    and   Dr. Phil   on the DVR.

10:30 PM: Read more of the   Frankenstein   book.

11:00 PM: Whipped up a batch of lime-flavored cream cheese Jello for tomorrow.

11:35 PM: Watched   KDKA TV’s Local News at 11:00 PM

11:40 PM: Now, we’re off to bed.  [Emmy] had an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon here in Altoona to get a second opinion on all the wrist problems she’s been experiencing in both hands.  The carpel tunnel operation she had back in 2007 has only provided marginal relief, and that’s even after a rigorous rehabilitation and exercise program.  Hopefully, she’ll get better results this time around.
