09:30 AM: I’m up.

09:45 AM: Facebooked for perhaps fifteen minutes. Friend count: 626 (unchanged). Fan count: 114 (unchanged).

11:00 AM: Examined the wiring in the basement in order to decide how best to tackle a new upcoming project; getting rid of most of the old cloth-insulated wires and replacing them with current wire technology.  I also want to add more outlets and circuits throughout the first floor.

12:00 PM: Watched today’s extended episode of CBS’s   Face the Nation    news broadcast via the DVR.

12:15 PM: Leaving now with sister Mary Ann to visit Mom and for a bit of shopping for   [Emmy].  Back later.

12:40 PM: We arrived at the nursing home.  Mom was still in bed, saying that she had trouble sleeping last night.  So we just sat alongside her in her bedroom and talked.

01:50 PM: Leaving Mom’s now for Sam’s Club.  Sister Mary Ann has some things to pick up there.  I need nothing however but love walking around in that huge place checking out the many thousands of different items they sell there.  I’m considering going halves on a membership with sister Jojo at some point.

02:15 PM: Then, we stopped at Subway for lunch.

03:00 PM: Finally, we stopped at Bed Bath & Beyond, where I quickly found the soap dispenser for    [Emmy].

03:30 PM: I’m back home.  I bought a   Simply Human   liquid soap dispenser for   [Emmy]   much like the one here in the kitchen that she likes so much.  Hers is a little taller, and unlike mine, comes with an additional holder dish for a small sponge.

04:00 PM: Nap time.  Back later.

06:00 PM: I’m awake again.

07:10 PM: Watched tonight’s edition of    NBC’s Nightly News   via the DVR.

08:00 PM: Watched some live news about the 2012 general election and the Republican nomination process that is happening right now.  Nothing surprising.   However, the negative rhetoric among the Republican candidates is heating up to feverish levels.  But this too, was not unexpected.  It happens that way every election cycle that I’ve observed over the past few decades.

11:00 PM: Talked with   [Emmy].

11:10 PM: I’m heading to bed.  Good night and do stop back tomorrow for more content.  Good night.

07:50 AM: I’m up.

08:05 AM: Facebooked for a bit. Friend count: 623 (up one). Fan count: 114 (unchanged).

08:10 AM: Lots of snow fell overnight; perhaps 4 to 6 inches.  So, no basement windows replacement project today.  Instead, I’ll probably continue organizing the basement, catch up on some television that I’ve been putting off, and catch up on these blogs as well.  Haven’t journaled in close to a month.  So I definitely owe the audio recorder a session or two to update the journal as well.

09:00 AM: Watched the 2012-01-03 episode of   Dr. Phil   via the DVR, called   Smart People, Bad Choices.

09:45 AM: Watched the 2012-01-04 episode of   Dr. Phil   via the DVR, called   CBS This Morning.

10:30 AM: Watched the 2012-01-05 episode of   Dr. Phil   via the DVR, called   B-Wars.

11:15 AM: Watched the 2012-01-06 episode of   Dr. Phil   via the DVR, called   Weight Wars.

12:30 PM: Took down and put away the Christmas tree.  Also, checked and repaired any burned-out bulbs in the ten strings of lights that I removed from the tree before stowing it.

01:15 PM: Made a large bowl of pasta and Parmesan cheese for lunch.

02:00 PM: Nap time.  Back later.

04:00 PM: I’m awake again.

04:20 PM: Watched last night’s episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   via the DVR.

05:10 PM: Watched the 2012-01-16 episode of NBC’s   Rock Center   in-depth news show via the DVR.

06:00 PM: Replaced kitchen electrical outlet to the left of stove due to loose-fitting sockets.  Items plugged into this outlet would sometimes fall out. The new outlet is much tighter.

07:15 PM: Replaced one faulty light dimmer in the kitchen for the bank of task lights above the stove.  Hmmm.  That’s the 2nd one I’ve replaced there in the past ten years.  If another fails, I’ll look into taking those lights off of the same circuit as the outlets near the stove.  Voltage spikes from appliances going on and off that are plugged into those outlets may be destroying these dimmers.

07:20 PM: I’m following the primary election returns in South Carolina on CNN throughout tonight.

08:40 PM: Corrected the wiring for and replaced the outlet in Mom’s old sitting room that feeds my treadmill.  A routine check revealed that the hot and neutral wires were reversed. Plus, the old recepticle had lots of old paint on it.  So now, this outlet works better, is safer, and looks nicer as well.  Oh, and it had a ground as well.  Nice.

11:00 PM: Talked with   [Emmy].

11:10 PM: I’m heading to bed.  Good night and do stop back tomorrow for more content.  Good night.

12:05 AM: The daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count for this run is ???, up from 946 at last check.  The record high for this dimension remains at 1788.  The next goal: 2000.

08:45 AM: I’m up.

09:00 AM: Facebooked for perhaps ten minutes. Friend count: 620 (up one). Fan count: 114 (unchanged).

11:10 AM: Leaving now to to shop for glass block window supplies at Lowe’s.  Back later.

01:30 PM: I’ve finished shopping at Lowe’s.  Now I’m waiting out front for my ride, just inside the exit doors.  It’s raining.

02:00 PM: While waiting, friend Wanda happened by and saw me.  She offered me a ride home once she was finished shopping, and invited me to wait in her warm car until she came back out.  Nice lady.  Our family has known her for decades.  In fact, she and I were in the same class when I attended public school in the late 6os.  Hmmm.  If I’d have known I’d run into her, I’d have brought the windows home with us, instead of paying to have them delivered.  Oh well, I’m still saving a boatload of money by installing these glass block windows myself instead of paying a contractor.

03:15 PM: I’m home, and still feeling somewhat wiped out from Momday’s treadmill workout.

04:30 PM: Watched today’s episode of  Dr. Phil,   called   Why Am I Still Single?

06:30 PM: Closely examined the cellar windows to see how best to remove them, so that I can replace three of them.  They’re to be delivered tomorrow.  I removed the bottom portion of the frame of the first window, and also learned how to remove and re-attach the window glass.  Even with the bottom frame removed, you can still put the glass back in the window well.  That will be handy for keeping the cold air out until I’m ready to install the glass blocks.

08:30 PM: Read the table of contents (ten pages) of this new book I bought last week, called Upgrading and Repairing PCs, the 20th Edition, by Scott Mueller.  I haven’t reviewed this information for several years, and this book discusses some technologies that I’ve never studied before.  Yep, it’s time to review as well as expand what I know about computers.

10:00 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of    NBC’s Nightly News    broadcast via the DVR.

11:00 PM: Talked to   [Emmy].

08:30 AM: I’m up.

08:40 AM: Facebooked for several minutes. Friend count: 606 (up one). Fan count: 114 (unchanged).

09:15 AM: Worked out on the treadmill for 40 minutes, walking and jogging approximately 2.3 miles and burning off roughly 390 calories, for walk 105 of 100 in 2011.  I made the 100-walk goal for this year.  Good!  Next year, I’ll try for 130 workouts.

10:45 AM: Leaving now to visit Mom at the nursing home.  Back later.

11:30 AM: I arrived at the nursing home and unpacked Mom’s clean clothes and packed up her dirty ones in the laundry bag I brought with me, to take home later on.

12:30 PM: It’s cold today but sunny and dry.

01:45 PM: I’m back home.  Mom was feeling very well today, had much energy, was only slightly tired, and we had a little lunch together whle watching bits and pieces of   The Young and the Restless   on the first floor lounge television.

06:00 PM: Watched   KDKA TV’s Local News   broadcast with   [Emmy].

08:00 PM: Spent a couple hours replacing roughly 25 burnt-out LED bulbs on the Christmas lights outside.  One string had so many out that none of them worked on that string. So I replaced it with a spare, working string, and then repaired the defective one at my work bench in the basement.

09:30 PM: [Emmy]   is watching   Mike & Molly   while I work here at the computer.

11:00 PM: [Emmy] and I watched tonight’s episode of   Hawaii Five-0.

11:15 PM: We’re going to bed.  We’re planning on visiting the Logan Valley Mall tomorrow afternoon to take in some of the many sights and sounds of Christmas.  True.  Altoona is no New York City.  But it should provide ample Christmas aromas, colors, and music to bolster our holiday spirits.  More then.  Good night.

Today’s Activities

  • Shower. DONE.

Log

04:50 AM: We’re up.  We showered last night before leaving home so we’d be ready at 5:30 AM this morning, to board the bus sister Mary Ann arranged, that will take us to New York City today.

05:30 AM: We had some trouble sleeping, perhaps owing to the fact that we’re not in my home, where we’re both much more used to sleeping.  But our anticipation and excitement for today’s trip is helping us overcome any tiredness we might have otherwise felt due to a lack of sleep last night.  We’re boarding the bus now.  Brrrrr.  It’s cold out, and there’s no sign yet of daylight in the moon-lit sky.

08:45 AM: We pulled over at a rest stop, whose name I do not know, in order to stretch our legs and take care of any business of nature any of us 35 day-trippers might have.  Much longer lines snaked around the interior of the visitor center at the rest stop, much longer than the line to the mens room.  I would notice this phenomenon at every public rest room I stopped at this day, both in New York and in PA.

09:00 AM: We’re back on the road again.

11:30 AM: We arrived in New York City, at 8th Ave. and 48th street.  This is very close to the Disney store, Time Square, and Radio City Music Hall, which we’ll be taking in a Rockette show at 4:30 PM: this afternoon.

12:00 PM: We visited Time Square, saw where they drop the New Years ball, and saw the Nasdaq headquarters and numerous other memorable businesses.

12:35 PM: We toured the Disney store.  The crowds are intense; not just in the store, but all over the side walks as well.  This complicated staying together with the rest of our party.  So, [Emmy]   and I decided to go off on our own.  We wanted to see the 9/11 memorial.  So we grabbed a cab and asked him to take us there.

01:00 PM: We’ve arrived at the 9/11 memorial.  The new Freedom Tower, which replaces the north and south towers of the World Trade Center that were destroyed on 9/11/2001, is still under construction.  So there was no shortage of bustling activity all around the site.

01:15 PM: We learned unfortunately that we could not enter the interior of the memorial, where the fountain and name plaques are, because we did not pre register.  Further, security regulations are quite tight and we worried that with our back packs, they might make us surrender them.  With so many people there, we were concerned that they’d be lost.  So, next time we come, we’ll leave the back packs at home and make sure we pre register.

02:00 PM: However, we could enter the 9/11 memorial visitor center, where we picked up some pamphlets about the freedom tower and about 9/11 itself.  We also examined what appeared to be a bronze mural on the wall facing the freedom tower just outside the visitor center.  This mural detailed events on 9/11, including the burning towers, firemen rigging up hoses and other equipment, and the police directing rescue operations.  With the pictures raised,   [Emmy]   could feel them and better appreciate their messages.

02:05 PM: We hailed a cab to Rockefeller Center, to see the traditional Christmas tree that they put up there every year.

02:25 PM: We arrived at Rockefeller Center and gazed at that beautiful and very large tree for several minutes.  I took a few pictures of it with my cell phone camera.

02:40 PM: We then headed for Radio City Music Hall to hang out until the Rockettes Christmas Show began at 4:30 PM.  But as soon as we arrived, we learned of the  “Stage Door” tour that we could take, that details the history of this hall, its hydraulic stage that can be elevated as well as turned.  We decided to go on this tour since we had some time to kill.

04:00 PM: The Radio City Music Hall stage door tour just ended. We got to listen to a Rockette answer questions about what it takes to become as well as remain a Rockette.  No seniority there.  No matter how experienced, every lady must re audition every year to retain her position in the company.  They also showed a video of how the stage is elevated and turned.  Neat.  Plus, they talked about the recent 70 million dollar restoration of the hall.  Quite informative.

04:15 PM: After the tour finished, we headed to our reserved seats in the hall to await the start of the Christmas show.  This is where we reunited with sister Mary Ann and her family.

04:30 PM: The show began, right on schedule.

05:55 PM: The show just ended.  Spectacular.  Perfectly flawless music orchestra and no errors were made by the dancers that I could see.  While I might have found this sort of theater boring as a kid, I’m awed by it today because of the level of perfection it displays.  I better appreciate today just how much it takes to put a high-quality performance like this one together.  What a wonderful way to stoke the Christmas spirits than to spend a day during the season in New York City, taking in a Christmas show in one of the most world renowned theaters.  Sweet.

06:45 PM: We hung out in one of the lobbies of the music hall then and enjoyed a virgin Rockettini drink.  It had quite a fruity flavor that did not decrease as the ice in the glass melted.  I bet that the ice was probably not water, as it did not dilute the flavor of the drink over time.  Perhaps they made this ice by freezing some of the liquid in the drink.

06:45 PM: We left Radio City Music Hall, bound for the Rockefeller Christmas tree.  We wanted to see it again, but in the dark this time.

07:15 PM: We passed by the NBC studios on the way to the tree, which is where they broadcast NBC’s   Nightly News   from. The tree was as gorgeous at night as much as it was this afternoon when we saw it the first time.  Perhaps this second visit would be considered redundant by some.  But I found it equally as enjoyable as the first nonetheless.

07:20 PM: We then headed to the pick-up point for our bus back to State College.

07:45 PM: The bus arrived a few minutes late due to the heavy traffic on this busiest Christmas shopping day in NYC.  We had to board quickly, as the driver could not remain stopped for long without being fined on that busy 8th Ave.  The trip home begins.

08:50 PM: We arrived at some Mall in New Jersey I think, to get some supper at its food court.

09:20 PM: [Emmy]   and I got some veggie pizza and we had some cookies for dessert that sister Mary Ann brought with her.  We’re back on the bus once again, speeding toward State College and sister Mary Ann’s place.

12:05 AM: The daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count for this run is 812, up from 810 at last check.  The record high for this dimension remains at 1788.  The next goal: 2000.

12:30 AM: We arrived at sister Mary Ann’s.  We had originally planned on spending this night as we did last.  However, our driver needed to get home.  So we packed up our belongings in Mary Ann’s basement, and began the half-hour trip back to Altoona.

01:00 AM: We’re home!  We’re so so tired.  Heading to bed now.  More tomorrow.  Good night.

08:00 PM: Leaving now to visit Mom and to meet   [Emmy]   at the train station back later.

08:45 AM: I’m here at the nursing home.  Mom’s awak but not yet out of bed. This is normal for her, as she typically does not get up before 11:00 AM.

09:20 AM: So, I busied myself putting away the clean clothes I brought for her and bagged up her laundry needing washed.

09:25 AM: Leaving the nursing home now for the train station.  [Emmy's]   train is scheduled to arrive at 9:51 AM.

09:30 AM: What a sloppy walk to the train station that was.  Rained the whole time, and it’s still raining, cold, and gray.

10:00 AM: The train just arrived and I met   [Emmy]   at train side.

10:20 AM: We got some chocolate milk and butterscotch krimpets at the little snack shop within the train station.  What a hearty breakfast!  Now, we’re headed to the nursing home.  Mom should be more awake this time around.

12:00 PM: We waited for Mom to be dressed.  Then we all went down to the lobby to visit and just hang out.  Mom looks much better.  All that excess fluid is gone from lower body, and she says she feels a bit happier.

12:15 PM: Leaving the nursing home now, bound for home.

12:50 PM: We’re home, and since the both of us got up so early this morning, it’s nap time now.  Back later.

02:00 PM: We’re awake again.

02:45 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   via the DVR.

05:00 PM: We started packing for our upcoming New York City trip.  I removed the staples, hooks, and tape from the new scarfs, hats, long underwear I purchased for this trip last week.

06:00 PM: Cooked some green pea soup and grilled cheese sandwiches for our supper.

07:30 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   via the DVR.

11:00 PM: Tagged, normalized, added, and updated approximately 136 songs from this and previous years to my music library from Promo Only throughout today.  I now have 2619 songs from 2011 cataloged.

10:30 AM: Leaving now to visit Mom.  [Emmy]   is staying home today, as we’ll be out and about tomorrow, giving blood.  She says that she’ll read her talking books and take a long bath while I’m gone.  Back later.

11:30 AM: Mom was up and at ‘em when I arrived, and was already working out in the gym.

12:30 PM: After she finished with the hand pedals, I fetched her a Texas hot dog and some French fries.  Good thing I brought my umbrella.  It’s been raining lightly outside all day so far.

01:30 PM: We watched   The Young and the Restless   together in the first floor TV room, and then went to the lobby to await my ride home.

01:45 PM: However, Mom was quite sad and sleepy, and soon said that she wanted to go up to bed.  Her exercising earlier may have played her out as well.  So, I bade her good-bye, and she went on up to her bedroom by herself, and I continued my wait in the lobby for my van ride.

03:00 PM: The van arrived.

03:30 PM: I’m home.  Visited Mom today.  She appears seriously sad.  So much so, that the nursing home wants to again send her to the hospital.  They’ve noticed a decline in her overall mood and ability to sleep over the past few weeks, and they’re concerned that the latest adjustments to her meds haven’t improved her disposition.  In fact, she was on the verge of tears during much of our visit today, and was disengaged for the rest of it.  Then, about an hour before I departed, she went up to bed.  She wants to wait until her primary care physician visits her this Wednesday, before deciding whether or not to be hospitalized.  Not good at the moment.

05:00 PM: Prepared my treasurer’s report for tonight’s board meeting of the   WPSBC Alumni Association.

07:45 PM: Attended the board meeting of the   WPSBC Alumni Association   via telephone conference call.  I gave my treasurer’s report, which was unanimously approved.  We almost did not have enough board members present for a valid board meeting to take place.  However, as we were just about to call it quits, one of the missing members called in, and allowed us to make the meeting official.  Primarily, we discussed the upcoming 125th anniversary of the school, and how we’ll celebrate it at the next convention (which will occur in August of 2012).  So far, the thrust of these discussions centered around extending the duration of the convention from the usual two to three days, and hold it from Thursday through Sunday.  We’re soliciting ideas about what sorts of activities the membership would like to experience in that extra day.  Please forward any ideas to me or the club president or any other board member.

08:20 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   via the DVR.

10:00 PM: Listened via Internet radio to the remainder of the Penguins hockey game.  Tonight, they shut out the Islanders, 5 to 0.

11:00 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of   Hawaii Five-0.

11:00 PM: We’re headed to bed.  Good night.  Come back for more tomorrow.

06:00 PM: I had planned on putting up more Christmas lights today.  However, the weather did not cooperate; it rained all day and was gray, damp, and cold to boot.  I think things are supposed to improve over the weekend.  I’ll get more of the light up then.

07:00 PM: Watched the 2011-11-14, 2011-11-15, and 2011-11-16 episodes of   The Young and the Restless   via the DVR.

08:30 PM: Watched the 2011-11-14, 2011-11-15, and 2011-11-16 episodes of   NBC’s Nightly News   broadcast via the DVR.

09:30 PM: [Emmy] watched the 2011-11-15 episode of    Unforgettable   via the DVR, while I perused the Internet, reading about sound reduction techniques for the home.

11:00 PM: We’re headed to bed.  Good night.  Come back for more tomorrow.

12:05 AM: The daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count increased this time, and currently stands at 812, up from 802 at last check.  The record high for this dimension remains at 1788.  The next goal: 2000.

Log

09:50 AM: I’m up.  It’s snowing outside, for the first time in this 2011-2012 winter storm season.  Temperatures are in the low 30s.

10:10 AM: Facebooked for several minutes. Friend count: 596 (up one). Fan count: 112 (unchanged).

04:00 PM: Watched the   Star Trek   original series episodes:   The Galileo Seven,   and   Court Martial   via Netflix.

05:55 PM Noticed that the new gutter de-icing heater I installed yesterday was not working.  So, spent a couple hours troubleshooting that problem, and found that the electricity supply to it in the attic was disconnected (by me, yes, now, I remember).  I did that to prevent the breaker from tripping prior to replacement of the defective heater, so the remaining good heaters could function properly.  You see?  This is why one should not put off pending projects for very long; because one starts forgetting details about the current state of the project, just as I had forgotten that I’d disconnected the power cable to the bad heater.  Oh well.  I’m lessening the incidents of procrastination in my life significantly. Indeed, I put off far less than I’ve ever put off before.  But I still catch myself avoiding those undesirable jobs from time to time.  I suppose this is part of me that still has not fully grown up yet.  Hey, perhaps I’ll be a full-fledged adult by the time I turn sixty years old.  I hope.  :-)

06:00 PM: Nap time.  Back later.

07:15 PM: I’m awake once again.

11:00 PM: Talked with   [Emmy].  We listened to tonight’s Penguins hockey game against the   Maple Leafs.  The Pens lost, 4 to 3.   Grrrrrrr.

12:05 AM: The daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count fell this time, and currently stands at 932, which is down from 973 at last check.  The record high for this dimension remains at 1788.  The next goal: 2000.

12:10 AM: I’m headed to bed.  Good night, and I’ll write more tomorrow.
