08:30 AM: I’m up.  Looks like a completely sunny day outside. Temperatures right now is in the mid 40s.

08:40 AM: Facebooked for a bit. Friend count: 592 (up two). Fan count: 112 (unchanged).

09:00 AM: Balanced Mom’s checking account.

09:10 AM: Verified with Mom’s bank that they’re no longer transferring money each month from her checking to savings, and that taxes are no longer being withheld from her railroad retirement pension.

10:00 AM: Located all papers associated with the dental work (five teeth pulled) that Mom had done during August of 2010.  We received a bill for this that we’ll have some difficulty paying, as Mom now only gets $45 per month in discretionary money.

10:05 AM: Scheduled a van trip to visit Mom for later this week.

11:00 AM: Called Mom’s dentists in Pittsburgh to ask about the above-mentioned bill.  Their billing specialist advised me to pay $50 on the bill, and include a letter asking for a hardship waiver.  She thinks we might be granted this waiver, since Mom has so little means now to pay.

11:15 AM: Scheduled an eye exam for myself.  It’s been just over two years since my last one, and I do need some new glasses.

11:30 AM: Scheduled a free in-home estimate to replace the 65 year-old windows in the bedroom, and the 40 year-old windows in the kitchen.  That will happen in early November.

11:45 AM Balanced my checking account.

12:30 PM: Wrote a letter to Mom’s dentists in Pittsburgh, pleading the case for the above-mentioned hardship waiver.

02:50 PM: Leaving now with brother in law Richard to pick up the new interior glass for the three windows here in my office.  I’m hoping that this will sufficient cut the road noise that comes in these windows.  Back later.

05:30 PM: I’m back home.

06:00 PM: I placed the new glass in the window frames where it will ultimately reside, just to see how well it attenuates the noise.  There is definite improvement.  This room is significantly quieter; the higher frequency noises outside are most effectively squelched.  However, significant unwanted sound remains; particularly when motorcycles pass by.  So I’m going to look into 1/2 inch thick glass instead of the 1/4 inch thick stuff I bought today.

07:20 PM: Mom called to chat for a minute.  She’s still not feeling very well; her stomach hurts.  She’s to see the doctor tomorrow about it.

08:00 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   via the DVR.

08:20 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   via the DVR.

11:00 PM: Talked with   [Emmy].  Tonight we watched the all new episode of   Hawaii Five-0.

12:00 PM: Watched the   Star Trek    episode   The Ultimate Computer,   from the original series via Netflix.  They offer digitally remastered versions of all the episodes in this series, and some of the new effects are stunning.  I’m amazed that the pictures look as clear and noise-free as they do.

12:05 AM: The daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count rose this time, and currently stands at 1013; up from 1011 at last check.  The record high for this dimension remains at 1788.  The next goal: 2000.

12:40 PM: Headed for bed.  More tomorrow.  Good night.

07:00 AM: I’m up.  Yet another dreary and dark autumn day outside, with drizzle, spritzing, and cool temperatures.  I’m not complaining though, because more rain means less loud motorcycles passing by here.

07:30 AM: Sister Jojo arrived to take me shopping and to visit Mom.  This morning, we’re visiting the Wal Mart in Huntingdon instead of the one in Altoona, since we’re picking up her son from college to bring him home for the weekend.

01:00 PM: Next, we headed to the nursing home to visit Mom.  She was still in bed when we arrived, and stayed in bed throughout our visit, although she did sit up to speak with us.  The nursing staff thinks that she may be reacting to the metfloxin (1 Gm) antibiotic (via IV) that they started eariler this week to fight that ongoing UTI.  Her physician is very concerned that Mom has not been able to fight these infections, and that she’s so depressed.  They’re hoping that this medicine will finally eradicate the UTI.  But she’s to receive it for four more days before they’ll know.  Her spirits seemed pretty good though she was groggy; not sleeping well again.  She asked for a stronger sleep aid but they won’t be able to administer it until early next week, assuming that her doctor approves.  I’d say Mom was half bad and half good today.

02:30 PM: We dined at Olive Garden.  I enjoyed the salad and bread sticks, along with a pepperoni and veggie pizza.

02:45 PM: We’re home.  Sister Jojo and her son came in for a minute to check out my new television and treadmill.  She also took some items from the stash of Mom’s things that we’re looking for homes for.

03:10 PM: Talked with   [Emmy].  She says that the sleep study she’s enrolled in will continue through to the end of 2012.  Wow.  This is a LONG study.  But with the preliminaries so involved just to get to this point in the study, she really can’t quit, since they’d be unable to replace her at this point.  Hopefully however, the remainder of the study will be less involved, so she can visit me more.

03:15 PM: Nap time.  Back later.

05:15 PM: I’m awake again.

07:30 PM: Watched today’s episode of   Dr. Phil,   called   Lisa Ling Investigates: The Secret World Of Amateur Adult Video.

07:40 PM: Facebooked for a bit. Friend count: 588 (down four). Fan count: 112 (unchanged).

08:15 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   via the DVR.

08:40 PM: Watched tonight’s episodes of    NBC’s Nightly News   via the DVR.

09:15 PM: Talked with sister Mary Ann to give her an update on Mom.

11:00 PM: Talked with   [Emmy].

11:10 PM: Headed for bed.  More tomorrow.  Good night.

12:05 AM: The daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count fell this time, and currently stands at 1026; down from 1030 at last check.  The record high for this dimension remains at 1788.  The next goal: 2000.

08:05 AM: I’m up.  Looks like a dark and dreary fall day outside, with drizzle and spritzing and cool temperatures.

08:10 AM: Cancelled today’s ride to the nursing home, as Mom requested that I not come today.

08:20 AM: Facebooked for a bit. Friend count: 592 (unchanged). Fan count: 112 (unchanged).

11:50 AM: Walked 11.15 miles on the treadmill today and burned nearly 1100 calories..  This constitutes walk 84 of 100 for 2011.

01:30 PM: Talked with   [Emmy].  She asked her telephone provider to check out her modem (again) to figure out why she experiences so many dropped calls.  Again, they offered no definite solution.

02:15 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   via the DVR.

03:00 PM: Watched today’s episode of   Dr. Phil,   called   Missing for a Decade: The Girl Escapes.

04:00 PM: I temporarily rehung the blinds on the two living room windows, to retain privacy until we install the sound-deadening glass and trim.

07:20 PM: Watched tonight’s episodes of    NBC’s Nightly News   via the DVR.

07:30 PM: Removed the trim from the third of the three windows in the living room in preps for the installation of interior sound-reducing glass.

11:00 PM: Talked with   [Emmy].

07:20 AM: I’m up.

07:45 AM: Facebooked a bit.  Friend count: 587 (unchanged).  Fan count: 113 (unchanged).

08:00 AM: Leaving now with sister Jojo for shopping and to visit Mom. Back later.

08:20 AM: We first stopped at Dunkin’ Donuts for our traditional cup of coffee.

09:15 AM: Next, we hit Wal Mart, where I picked up some weekly food staples (fruit, orange juice, and milk).  I also found those very small cans of diet Pepsi for Mom (7 ounces each approximately).  She requested these, as she rarely finished the 20 ounce bottles before they go flat.

10:30 AM: Next, we visited Sears, where I bought three pairs of shoes (one pair of cross trainer shoes to use on the treadmill once it arrives, a casual wear pair, and a pair of high-top work shoes).

11:00 AM: Next, we went to PennDOT to renew my state Id card.

11:45 AM: Next, we headed over the the nursing home to see Mom.

01:00 PM: We then took Mom to her favorite Mexican restaurant for lunch.  She just loves those eat-a-bowl taco salads.  Her friend Jeff accompanied us there as well.

02:00 PM: Next, with the weather so sunny and beautiful today, Mom wanted to sit out under the trees at the front of the nursing home, and enjoy the fall folliage.

02:15 PM: Leaving now for home.  I think Mom was ready for us to go, as she had become noticeably distracted and sleepy.  I wheeled her back inside and said goodbye.

02:30 PM: I’m home.

04:00 PM: I spent an hour or so dragging the rest of the branches I cut yesterday down to the burn pile.  So again, this exercise qualifies for another walk; walk 82 of 100 for 2011.

04:45 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   via the DVR.

04:50 PM: Skipped the 2011-10-05 episode of   Dr. Phil,   called   Life in the Fast Lane.  Didn’t seem like a show I’d be interested in.

05:35 PM: Watched the 2011-10-06 episode of   Dr. Phil,   called   My Life Deleted.  This involved people losing their memories whether due to an accident of some sort, or some psychologically based reason, and how deeply they and those close to them are affected.

06:20 PM: Watched today’s episode of   Dr. Phil,   called   Extreme Jealousy.

06:40 PM: Watched today’s episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   broadcast via the DVR.

08:00 PM: Washed the three windows here in the first floor office, in preps for the work tomorrow to install sound reducing interior glass on them over the next week or wo.  I used a little dish soap and lots of water, along with a couple microfiber wiping cloths from Sam’s Club.  And for those few spots of tree sap that stuck to the outside panes like glue, I applied a little Goo Gone, let it sit for a minute or so, and then scrubeed the hardened sap lumps right off.

09:30 PM: Made a temporary place in the living room for the new treadmill, which is being delivered sometime between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM tomorrow morning.  I’ll probably put the treadmill in the back room, once we finish getting rid of the stuff stored there and put the banquet tables away that are currently taking up much of the floor.

10:10 PM: Reprogrammed the Atlantic Broadband DVR remote to operate the new television.  Unfortunately, this remote does not include all the buttons to completely access the functions of a smart HDTV.  So next time I visit the cable company for a DVR replacement, I’ll ask if they offer a more up-t0-date remote.

11:00 PM: Talked with   [Emmy].

12:05 AM: The daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count fell this time, and currently stands at 1033; up from 1023 at last check.  The record high for this dimension remains at 1788.  The next goal: 2000.

12:10 AM: Bed time.  More tomorrow.  Good night.

07:45 AM: I’m up.  It’s dark, dreary, and rainy outside this morning.

08:15 AM: Facebooked a bit.  Friend count: 581 (unchanged).  Fan count: 111.

10:30 AM: Sister Mary Ann arrived, and we continued the cleanup and clean-out of the first floor items no longer needed here at the house.  I gave away a whole shelf of books, to make room for Mom’s photo albums and documents of family memorabilia.

01:00 PM: We went out shopping for a new HD TV, to replace Mom’s SD TV that sister Christine now has.  I settled on a Sharp Aquos 60” LED TV, model LC60LE832U purchased from Sam’s Club.  So far, I’ve found this device quite easy to set up and operate, and absolutely love the markedly increased picture clarity of high definition television over standard definition television, which I’ve watched routinely and frequently until now.  This is one upgrade that truly IS an upgrade.

03:45 PM: We then drove to Sears to purchase a stand for my new television.  First, we checked at a used furniture place in Altoona, hoping to find something cheap but strong and pleasing in appearance.  But we saw nothing but one very low, oval oak table, that would make a nice coffee table but not a good TV stand.

04:10 PM: A fellow arrived who will haul away the stuff here that no one in the family wants.  He’s working the junk pile out back now.

05:00 PM: Sister Mary Ann and I carried the new TV in, and I assembled its base and the TV stand.  Then, she helped me lift the TV onto that stand.

05:30 PM: I then connected up the TV to our cable system.  No problems.  However, we won’t be able to view much in HD until I move the DVR downstairs from my bedroom TV upstairs.  So I’m doing that now.

06:15 PM: The DVR has been connected via an HDMI cable to the new television.  The first HD images are visible now.  Quite sweet it is.

06:30 PM: The hauler guy finished loading up his truck with our old junk and drove off.  We also contracted him to come back tomorrow, to get the rest.  He’ll be here at 8:00 AM.

06:35 PM: While I was working on the TV, sister Mary Ann was de-cluttering all the rooms on the first floor here.  She rearranged my new bedroom (Mom’s old bedroom) for easier access.  But we’re hungry for supper now.  So we’re heading to Tipton, to Austin’s Texas Hot Dogs.  Back later.

07:00 PM: We’re back home, and the Texas hot dogs were delicious as usual.

08:30 PM: Sister Mary Ann ran the vacuum throughout the entire first floor, and I put things away, organized all the new papers and manuals I acquired today, and helped her in her efforts.  She’s leaving now.  Good bye, sister.  Your help is truly appreciated.

09:00 PM: We drove to Meadows for an ice cream cone twist.  It’s okay, because I’m getting a treadmill next week.

10:00 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   via the DVR.

11:00 PM: Talked with   [Emmy].

11:45 PM: Played with the new TV, configured it to connect to the Internet, set up my Netflix account on it, and watched a bit of a modern-day version of Alice in Wonderland.

11:10 PM: Bed time.  More tomorrow.  Good night.

12:05 AM: The daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count fell this time, and currently stands at 1035; down from 1048 at last check.  The record high for this dimension remains at 1788.  The next goal: 2000.

07:30 AM: [Emmy]   and I are up.  We’ll let   [Mentat]   sleep a bit longer.

09:35 AM: Leaving now for WPSBC, and the fun day social.  Back later.

09:40 PM: Twisted my ankle on a pothole on Centre Ave.  It took several minutes for the pain to subside enough to resume the walk.  But it slowly loosened up and we could continue our trek to the school.

09:45 PM: We arrived at the school to find a throng of other folks getting out of their para-transit (Access) vehicles.  We then headed back to the cafeteria area, where they were serving doughnuts and coffee.  Quite a crowd (perhaps thirty) was already there.  Hmmm, guess we should have arrived a half-hour earlier.

01:00 PM: We bowled a few frames at the school’s newly revamped bowling alleys, that now include automatic pin setting and score keeping equipment.  We did not play a complete regulation game, though these remodeled alleys appeared more “regulation” than what was there in the 70s.

02:15 PM: We then wandered down to the darts room (which used to be the biology classroom when I was a student).  A couple “experts” taught [Emmy] how to aim and throw the darts.  Eventually, she could hit the board most every time she threw.

04:15 PM: We then headed upstairs and outside to the old boys side playground area (now turned into a driveway and parking lot), where the remaining crowed was gathered.

05:30 PM: We spent the next hour plus saying goodbye to everyone and expressing how much we are looking forward to the 2012 alumni convention.  The weather all day was mostly sunny, cool, and dry with gentle breezes; a classic fall day.

05:35 PM: Then, we, along with [Tad] and his wife, were the last ones to leave the school grounds.  We headed back to   [Emmy's]   apartment.

05:45 PM: We’re back at   [Emmy's].  Boy, what a fun day we had!

06:00 PM: Leaving now for supper at   Pizza Pronto.  Back later.

07:30 PM: We finished most of the pizza we bought, and have returned to   [Emmy's].

10:15 AM: Facebooked a bit.  Friend count: 583 (unchanged).  Fan count: 111 (unchanged).

10:30 PM: We spent the rest of the evening talking and rocking in [Emmy's]  glider rocking chairs, as syncing the hard disk drive [Mentat] brought with him with [Emmy's] drive.  But like last night, we’re quite tired.  So we’re going to bed.  Good night.

11:00 AM: Spackled a small hole on the door wall in [Emmy's] bathroom.  I made this hole a year or two ago, when I put up a hand towel hanger ring for her.  We discovered that we could not use this hole, as the electrical box on the other side of this wall prevented sufficient penetration for a strong mount.

11:50 AM: Heading out to lunch at our favorite Indian restaurant.  Back later.

01:15 PM: Walked   [Emmy]   back to her apartment.  Now, heading to WPSBC to meet [Tad].  We have some banking business to take care of today for the   WPSBC Alumni Association.

01:45 PM: [Tad] and I are leaving the school for the bank.  We’re walking.

02:00 PM: The meeting with the banker begins…

03:15 PM: As [Tad] is the current president of the   WPSBC Alumni Association,   he must be authorized to sign checks and conduct any other necessary business with the alumni association’s checking account.  However, due to missing information and inconsistent data that the bank had on file pertaining to our current checking account, the banker suggested that we start up a new business checking account.  We initiated that process today, and [Tad] has been fully authorized as a signer on the new account.

04:00 PM: [Tad] and I then walked to Dunkin’ Donuts for some coffee, to sort of, unwind and get out of business banking mode.  Then, with the rain beginning to fall, his wife came along in her car and graciously offered me a ride back to [Emmy's].  I indeed took her up on it.  I bade [Tad] and his wife [Morra] farewell.  I’ll see them tomorrow at the alumni fun day.

04:10 PM: Arrived at   [Emmy's].

06:00 PM: [Emmy] and I walked to CVS Pharmacy to pick up some WD-40 spray lubricant.  She’s got a kitchen faucet that squeaks obtrusively when actuated, and I hope that spraying the WD-40 underneath its coverings and into the inner mechanism will quiet it.

07:00 PM: We also stopped in at SuperCuts, where I purchased my monthly haircut for $10.

07:30 PM: We’re back at [Emmy's] apartment, preparing for   [Mentat's]   arrival in a couple hours.

09:00 PM: We made up   [Mentat's]   bed as we waited for him.

08:50 PM: [Mentat]   arrived as   [Emmy]   watched a new prime time show on CBS: A Gifted Man.

11:00 PM: We spent the rest of the evening catching up and syncing hard disk drives.  But we’re all tired though excited about the social at the school tomorrow.  So we’re heading to bed.  Good night.

04:00 PM: Browsed around on the web for information about obtaining and installing new storm windows (we have none except for the windows in Mom’s bedroom currently).  This would not only lower our utility bills but also cut down on the traffic noise which, as of late, has become quite the irritant.  Looks like Lowe’s and Home Depot sell them.  I also watched a few videos on installing them.  Doesn’t seem too complicated.

05:45 PM: Leaving now for walk 79 of 100 for 2011, again, to the south cemetery.  Back in an hour.

06:45 PM: I’m back.    The temperature was 73 degrees, mostly cloudy, little wind, and mostly dry with a bit of spritzing here and there.

10:00 PM: [Emmy] and I listened to the first pre season Penguins hockey game of the 2011-2012 season.  The Pens beat Detroit, 3 to 2.

Today’s Diet: 2011-09-16

Friday, September 16th, 2011

I keep this food and fitness diary to stay aware of just how many calories I’m eating daily, my weight, and blood pressure with the hope that seeing these numbers repeatedly and often decreases the likelihood that I’ll overeat.    It seems to work, so here we go with another day…

Weight Log

Today’s weight: 180.0 pounds.  That’s down a pound from yesterday.  The 2011 year low weight so far: 177.5 pounds. The high weight is 185.5 pounds (established on 2011-04-13).

Food Log

Today, I consumed the following items:

  • Herbal tea throughout the day. 0 calories.
  • 08:00 AM: 1 tablespoon of Metamucil in water.  60 calories.
