08:45 AM: I’m up.

09:00 AM: Facebooked for a bit. Friend count: 633 (up one). Fan count: 113 (unchanged).

12:00 PM: Removed the lattice work frame from beneath the south porch.  You’ll recall that I had to detach the lattice work itself last month while upgrading the basement windows to glass block assemblies.  Well, it’s time to put the lattice work back together now that those basement window upgrades are finished.  As this frame was nailed in with the nail heads sunk into the wood, I had to actually break the nails apart with a chisel and hammer.  No problem however.  Once the nail bodies were snapped by chiseling, the could be easily pulled out from both the lattice frame work wood and the porch itself.

12:30 PM: Unfortunately, the chiseling broke the lattice work frame.  So, I just glued it back together and clamped it.  The glue should be completely dry in the next day or two.

02:00 PM: Watched the 2012-02-16 and 2012-02-17 episodes of   The Young and the Restless   via the DVR.

02:20 PM: Watched last night’s edition of   NBC’s Nightly News    via the DVR.

05:30 PM: Leaving now for an evening ‘out on the town’ at a local club with sister Christine, her husband, and a couple of their friends.  They believe that my knowledge of popular music due to my disc jockey experience, will help their team win tonight.  Well, we’ll see.

12:30 AM: I’m back home.  Our team indeed did win.  The winning song was the Jimmy Castor Bunch’s hit Troglodyte.  Many of the songs I did not know however, and even if I did, the group and song title often eluded me.  But apparently, we all knew enough to place first in tonight’s contest.  The bar atmosphere of the club was much more enjoyable than I recall in decades past, now that many bars and clubs no longer allow smoking within.  Though the scene tonight was a crowded and noisy one, I really enjoyed myself.  Thanks go to sister Christine for inviting me.  Perhaps next month, we’ll do it again.

12:35 AM: I’m heading to bed.  Good night and do stop back tomorrow for more content.  :-)    Good night.

09:45 AM: I’m up.

10:00 AM: Facebooked for perhaps ten minutes. Friend count: 620 (up four). Fan count: 114 (unchanged).

11:30 AM: [Emmy] called to say that she misses being here, and I certainly miss having her around.  I just may have to visit her later this month.

12:00 PM: Took down the three strings of icicle Christmas lights on the south porch.  No repairs needed this time, and no bulbs were out.  Amazing how much longer the lights last when they’re not out in all the weather (these were situated under the porch roof, and so they got little rain exposure).

12:30 PM: Took down all lights on the west stoop.  Just two bulbs needed replacing in these. The strings themselves are still in very good shape, even though I bought these back in 2008 and have used them each Christmas holiday season since.

01:10 PM: Watched today’s episode of CBS’s  Face The Nation   via the DVR.

02:00 PM: Watched this past Sunday’s episodes of NBC’s   Meet The Press    weekly news broadcast via the DVR.

03:00 PM: Worked on getting this blog caught up; I’m perhaps ten days behind on these journal entries.

03:05 PM: Hmmm.  The DVR recorded no episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   broadcast last night.

04:00 PM: Heading for sister Christine’s house.  We’re going to watch the Steelers Vs. Broncos game.  Back later.

08:10 PM: I’m back home, with a heavy heart.  The Steelers lost to the Broncos in overtime play, 29 to 23.  Grrrrrr.

10:00 PM: Just added this week’s batch of 160 new songs to my DJ music library.  While I do not DJ much anymore, It’s sure nice having this stuff on the iPods.  Great treadmill music.

11:00 PM: Talked with   [Emmy].

11:50 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of CBS’s   60 Minutes   news broadcast via the DVR.

12:05 AM: The daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count for this run is 936, up from 927 at last check.  The record high for this dimension remains at 1788.  The next goal: 2000.

12:50 AM: Watched the last two episodes of the 1970s children’s sci-fi show   Space Academy,   called   Star Legend,    and   Johnny Sunseed.

01:00 AM: I’m heading to bed.  Good night and do stop back tomorrow for more content.  :-)    Good night.

10:00 AM: We’re up.  Today is my birthday.  I’m thankful to have lived another year without any noticeable degradations in my health.

10:15 AM: Facebooked for several minutes. Friend count: 610 (up two). Fan count: 114 (unchanged).

10:20 AM: No treadmill workout today.

12:30 PM: Cleared out the areas inside the eight windows I’m having replaced tomorrow, took down curtains and blinds from them, and removed most screws holding the kitchen sink window shut.  No need for these after tomorrow.

02:15 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   via the DVR.

05:00 PM: [Emmy]   and I ordered a veggie pizza from Brother’s Pizza in Bellwood. It arrived about fifteen minutes ago, and delicious it was.

06:00 PM: We watched KDKA TV’s local news at 5:00 PM.

08:00 PM: [Emmy] read talking books while I worked on getting caught up on some Misc. paperwork here in the office.

10:30 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   via the DVR.

11:00 PM: [Emmy]   is heading to bed.

11:30 PM: I finished converting and normalizing a new batch of songs.  I’ll tag and add them to the music library.

11:35 PM: Hmmm.  I’m surprised that   [Olga]   did not call to wish me a happy birthday this year.  Every year for perhaps the past ten years or more, she’s reliably checked in on this day.  I hope nothing’s gone wrong in her life.

12:05 AM: The daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count for this run is 860, up from 850 at last check.  The record high for this dimension remains at 1788.  The next goal: 2000.

07:30 PM: Watched today’s episode of   Dr. Phil   via the DVR,   called   Desperately Seeking Attention.

07:50 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   via the DVR.

08:00 PM: I noticed that after unplugging the Explorer 8300 DVR in order to rearrange the cables behind my entertainment center, that the DVR “forgot” some of the scheduled future recordings I had programmed it last week to make.  This is likely not a problem unique to this particular machine, as I’ve observed this phenomenon in the last DVR I had.  So, I’ll just have to remember to check the upcoming events list after power to the DVR has been interrupted, and make sure it’s complete.  If it’s not, reprograming sets it to rights.

10:00 PM: Tagged, normalized, and added approximately 365 songs from this year to my music library from Promo Only.  I now have 1449 songs from 2011.  Though I do not DJ professionally anymore, I still love music and enjoy immensely, keeping my library up-to-date.  The total library song count is now 61992.

10:30 PM: [Emmy]  says that she successfully downloaded and extracted last night’s hockey game from my web site.  She has placed the .3gp audio file onto an NLS DTB cartridge, since it sounds better on the NLS DTB player than it does on the Stream.  The Player is louder and has a much fuller sound than the Stream in loud-speaker mode.

11:00 PM: Talked with   [Emmy].

11:10 PM: I’m heading to bed.  More tomorrow.

08:45 AM: I’m up.

09:50 AM: Got caught up on the blogs and Facebook.

11:00 AM: Leaving now with nephew Garrett for Grant’s graduation party.  Back later.

01:00 PM: Hung out around sister Christine’s pool for a couple hours, just shooting the breeze with family and friends.  Kind of reminded me of that song last year from Nickelback, called   This Afternoon,  that talks of spending the afternoon, the evening, and well into the next morning just chilling with fond friends and relatives, and how much fun that can be.

01:15 PM: I ordered 56 pieces of square pizza (two big flats of it).  I was hungry and so apparently, were all the kids.

01:45 PM: Nephew Grant went to pick up the pizza and upon his return, he was mobbed by us folks with the big appetites.  Yep.  The pizza was a big hit.  They may have even liked it more than the sounds of my music.

01:45 PM: Set up the DJ equipment in the lower yard, under the trees near the fire pit.  So far, everything is working well.  This is the first time I’ve used Windows 7 at a gig.  So I’m a bit nervous.  However, I’m not anticipating any problems, as I’ve worked it pretty good on my bench at home and found no bugs.  Just in case the main computer experiences non recoverable difficulties, I’ve brought two iPods.  I can play from them in a pinch.

02:00 PM: I began music play; a mix of mostly new dance tunes but interspersed with numerous classic rock pieces so that the older folk among us (including me) would not grow bored.

03:00 PM: Mom and her friend Jeff arrived in the wheelchair van about ten minutes ago; both of them smiling ear-to-ear.  Getting them through the breezeway out to the patio proved a bit of a challenge; but probably more for them than for us who were assisting.

06:00 PM: Lots of people have come; near a hundred I think.  I left the music table for a while to mill among them and catch up with friends I haven’t seen in a while.  I sure miss [Emmy] being here.

08:00 PM: One lady asked if I’d be interested in DJing her Halloween party in a few months.  I told her that I’ve all but stopped DJing professionally. But I invited her to give me a call and see what exactly she has in mind.  I might do it if I could pay for a significant part of this year’s music subscriptions withe the proceeds.

10:00 PM: I began gradually lowering the master volume on the music; that’s how I ramp down from an evening of fun-filled dancing in the volleyball field.  I also switched over to softer music of the adult contemporary variety, to further cement my message that there will be no more loud music tonight from this point on.

12:00 AM: I’m back home.  Too late to chat with   [Emmy]   tonight.  So I’ll call her in the morning.

12:05 AM: Reviewed the daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count moved higher again this time, and now stands at  1691; up from 1669 yesterday.  The new record high is now 1691.  The next goal: 2000.

04:00 PM: I’m awake once again.

06:00 PM: Added all 47 songs from Promo Only’s EA DFF music series to the music library; the 2011-05 week 4 edition.

06:30 PM: Talked with Mom.  She was out and about this afternoon.  I guess that’s why she didn’t answer when I tried calling her a couple times earlier today.  It’s good that she’s feeling much better than a couple months ago.

07:00 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   via the DVR.

08:30 PM: Synced all my 2011 music to one of my iPods.  There are 886 songs so far for this year at 3.01 GB.  I think I’ll designate one iPod for new music, another for older stuff, and another for podcasts.  Then I’ll take which ever one I’m in the mood to listen to on my walks.  Though the iPod Touch would hold all my playlists I have currently, I worry about taking that one out and about for fear of losing it.

11:00 PM: Talked with   [Emmy]   and we watched tonight’s rerun episode of   Hawaii Five-0.

12:05 AM: Reviewed the daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count jumped up significantly, and now stands at 1259; up from 1233 yesterday!  Looking great.  Next goal: 1500.

06:00 AM: I’m up. There’s a large stack of papers (bills, updated insurance documents, recent bank statements, and such) that I plan on filing this morning.  Plus, I’ll add a disc or two more to the Tommy’s Tunes music library to fill in more of the requested music from the   DJ Gig: 2010-12-31   effort, that I did not have at that time.

07:00 AM: Finished my early morning Facebook session.  Friend count: 381.  Fan count: 95.

07:40 AM: Added the   Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam   CD to my DJ music library (15 songs).

08:45 AM: Made several friend suggestions to a couple of my Facebook friends from WPSBC.  Hopefully as a result, they’ll connect with each other.

09:50 AM: On waste and fraud in government: Certainly waste is never desirable. So it should be purged, so long as we don’t get rid of “lean tissue” programs that serve the nation well or would serve it better with some tweaking. Also, one person’s waste is another’s necessity. So we need consensus on what true waste is, before deleting vital expenditures willynilly.

11:30 AM: I’ve been filing papers and bills in the office writing blitzes.  :-)

12:10 PM: Registered Mom’s Visio television we bought last November with the manufacturer.

12:25 PM: Ordered a pack of four HDMI cables on eBay, so I can try out my DVR on Mom’s Visio TV.  I think we can get more HD channels when using the DVR as a set-top tuner than with the TV’s internal tuner.  We’ll see.

12:30 PM: Ordered a free t-shirt from Promo Only music subscriptions.

12:35 PM: Working on the next piece for the   Tom’s Views   blog.

04:45 PM: Posted the   Tom’s Views –> Drug Testing For Food Stamps   piece.

09:00 PM: Watched today’s episodes of   The Young and the Restless   and   Dr. Phil   on the DVR.

10:10 PM: Talked with   [Emmy]   on this decidedly snowy night.  32 degrees currently, cloudy, and lots of wet and heavy snow is weighing down the tree branches, bending them to the ground, like some invisible giant sitting on them would do.

10:30 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   on the DVR.  Lots of coverage on the president’s speech last night, but perhaps even more of Christine Bachman’s overly passionate rebuttal.  She lost most of her credibility when she referred in a derogatory way to the Affordable Health Care Act of 2010 as “Obamacare.”  Vitriol!  So I don’t listen to much of what she says these days.  She appears to be just another Sarah Palin wannabe; employing the usual, sensational spin on the facts, larded heavily with exaggerations and gross omissions.  I applaud news outlets like NBC and CNN for holding these folks accountable for the inflammatory rhetoric they spew.  Keep at it guys.

10:45 PM: Well, you guessed it, it’s time for bed.  More tomorrow.  Good night.

08:00 AM: I’m up.  Less brrrrr this morning.  Temperatures have climbed up to 26 degrees F over the past 24 hours.

11:35 AM: Registered our new washing machine with the manufacturer.  Had a little trouble locating the serial number.  But a call to thier automated customer experience line quickly instructed me on where to look.  It turned out to be printed on a sticker underneath the lid, between the hinges.

12:30 PM: Spent my lunch hour talking with   [Emmy]   on the phone.  She received the Christmas gifts I mailed her last Friday, yesterday.  She  loves her new teapot although she has no permanent spot to sit it.  She has little counter space in her apartment.  So any time she goes to use an appliance, she must get it out, and then, when she’s finished with it, put it away again.

01:40 PM: Paid all six pending bills.

02:00 PM: Balanced the   WPSBC Alumni Association‘s   checking account.  Light duty here, as we had no transactions this month except for a new monthly service charge of $3 for sending us a paper statement.  Gosh, free checking accounts are getting harder and harder to find.

02:45 PM: Added the   2009-10   edition of Promo Only’s   Dance Radio   music series to my DJ music library (22 songs).

05:45 PM: Watched today’s episodes of   The Young and the Restless   and   Dr. Phil   on the DVR.

06:00 PM:  I have three similar programs in my DJ software, and one of them began crashing after I made what I thought were the  same changes to all three. Yet the other two still work. Hmmm. Time to pull out my UltraCompare program, to diff the files and see which change I flubbed in the crasher. I LOVE IDM Software (UltraEdit, UltraCompare, et al).

07:15 PM: Found this problem with UltraCompare and fixed it with Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2008.  In the crashing program, I had forgotten to copy the block of code that allocates memory for internal purposes.  I added this block, compiled, and tested, and I’m pleased to report that all is well now.  Hale to UltraCompare!

07:20 PM: I’m calling   [Emmy]   to listen to tonight’s Penguins hockey game.  We’ll catch the first two periods of it anyhow but will cut ver to the president’s address sometime during the third.  That’s going to kill   [Emmy]   as she rarely misses any part of a hockey game.  But in this case, what the president has to say is probably more important.

08:30 PM: Added   Disney Pixar Greatest   collection to my music library (24 non duplicate songs).  Did this to get Randy Newman’s Toy Story movie classic: You Got A Friend in Me. Someone asked for this at the last gig and it surprised me to learn that I did not have it.  But, I do now, as well as 23 other Disney movie and show tunes.

08:35 PM: Now,  We’re watching the State of the Union presidential address at 9:00 PM as well as the republican and TEA party reactions.

11:00 PM: We’ve seen all three speeches (the president’s, the republican response, and the TEA party’s response).  The republican response was civil and measured, and the TEA party speech was sensational and at times, wildly over the top.

11:15 PM: Taking the garbage out.  Yep, it’s that time of the week again.

11:45 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   on the DVR.

11:50 PM: Hmmmm.  I just realized that I’ve not experienced one headache this year, and to this, I attribute my omission of most sources of caffeine from the diet, such as black tea and regular coffee.  In fact, I’ve cut way back on the decaffeinated coffee as well, opting to drink only one or two large cups a week, and cut my chocolate consumption back to one square every two or three days.  Yep, as far as i’m concerned, more than a very small amount of caffeine causes nasty, mood-fouling headaches.

12:10 PM: Bed, I’m coming.  Good night all, good night   [Emmy],   and I’ll have more to write tomorrow.  Until then…

06:45 AM: I’m up.  Today I plan on adding a couple more dance CDs to my DJ music library, continue going through all my clothes and bag up those items I no longer wear or want, and cooking 16 quarts of ham and bean soup in the roaster.

07:00 AM: Coldest day of this winter season here on our east porch (1.9 degrees F).  Brrrrrr!  You’d never know that in here however.  With furnace and all the gas and electric heaters we’ve got going, the inside temperature hovers at around 70 degrees.  It’s only when you get close to an outside wall that you can feel that it must be quite cold outside.

07:15 AM: Facebooked a bit.  Friend count: 367 (up one).  Fan count: 91 (unchanged).

07:30 AM: Beginning system backups.  Wow, over a hundred spam users to purge this week as well as perhaps 300 spam comments.

09:20 AM: Cut up five and a half pounds of ham into bite-sized cubes, threw them into the beans and started the whole mixture boiling.  It’s supposed to cook for two and a half hours before adding the rest of the (flavorful) ingredients (spices, tomatoes, onions, and lemon juice).

10:00 AM: iPodded for the past three quarters of an hour and while doing that, I finished the system backups and checked on the beans.  They’re finally starting to boil.

10:25 AM: Posted the   Weekly Backups: 2011-01-22   piece.

11:30 AM: Posted the   Mom’s Status: 2011-01-22   piece.

12:40 PM: The ham and bean soup is done cooking and I’m having some for lunch now.  Mmmmmm mmmmmm!  It’s not Campbell’s, but it sure tastes good.

01:10 PM: Lunch is done.  I’ll let the rest of the soup cool down for an hour or so, and then ladle it into containers for freezing.

01:25 PM: Had to disable pingback and trackback support on all blogs because I’ve been receiving hundreds of spam messages per day all this week, and removing them is beginning to consume a significant part of my day.

01:45 PM: Just cleaned up after the bean soup cooking and am headed now for a nap.  Back later.

03:45 PM: I’m back up again.  Off to get the mail.  Hopefully, my fingers won’t stick to that bitterly cold door knob like they did this morning.

05:30 PM: The soup has been transferred from the roaster to individual serving containers and placed in the basement freezer for future hearty meals.  Now I’m cleaning up the kitchen.

07:30 PM: Rounded up today’s rubbish in the basement: Four old tube AM radios bought on eBay in 2006. Back then, I harbored exciting visions of restoring and then selling them for profit.  But the pristine ones sold for not much more than those needing TLC.  Plus, new dreams, which have nothing to do with fixing up old radios, have assumed forefront on my mind’s stage of imagination and hope. So goodbye junk.

10:15 PM: Listened to the Penguins hockey game with   [Emmy].  The Pens won, 3 to 2, although we weren’t if they’d be able to hold on, as the other team started catching up. In fact, had time not run out when it did, they might have tied it, or even pulled ahead. Momentum seemed to favor them in the third period.  But fortunately, the Pens prevailed.

11:30 PM: Bed time.  Talk at you more tomorrow.  Good night.
