08:30 AM: We’re up.

08:45 AM: Facebooked for several minutes. Friend count: 602 (unchanged). Fan count: 114 (unchanged).

10:30 AM: Leaving now to visit Mom.  [Emmy]   is staying home today, as we’ll be out and about tomorrow, giving blood.  She says that she’ll read her talking books and take a long bath while I’m gone.  Back later.

11:30 AM: Mom was up and at ‘em when I arrived, and was already working out in the gym.

12:30 PM: After she finished with the hand pedals, I fetched her a Texas hot dog and some French fries.  Good thing I brought my umbrella.  It’s been raining lightly outside all day so far.

01:30 PM: We watched   The Young and the Restless   together in the first floor TV room, and then went to the lobby to await my ride home.

01:45 PM: However, Mom was quite sad and sleepy, and soon said that she wanted to go up to bed.  Her exercising earlier may have played her out as well.  So, I bade her good-bye, and she went on up to her bedroom by herself, and I continued my wait in the lobby for my van ride.

03:00 PM: The van arrived.

03:30 PM: I’m home.  Visited Mom today.  She appears seriously sad.  So much so, that the nursing home wants to again send her to the hospital.  They’ve noticed a decline in her overall mood and ability to sleep over the past few weeks, and they’re concerned that the latest adjustments to her meds haven’t improved her disposition.  In fact, she was on the verge of tears during much of our visit today, and was disengaged for the rest of it.  Then, about an hour before I departed, she went up to bed.  She wants to wait until her primary care physician visits her this Wednesday, before deciding whether or not to be hospitalized.  Not good at the moment.

05:00 PM: Prepared my treasurer’s report for tonight’s board meeting of the   WPSBC Alumni Association.

07:45 PM: Attended the board meeting of the   WPSBC Alumni Association   via telephone conference call.  I gave my treasurer’s report, which was unanimously approved.  We almost did not have enough board members present for a valid board meeting to take place.  However, as we were just about to call it quits, one of the missing members called in, and allowed us to make the meeting official.  Primarily, we discussed the upcoming 125th anniversary of the school, and how we’ll celebrate it at the next convention (which will occur in August of 2012).  So far, the thrust of these discussions centered around extending the duration of the convention from the usual two to three days, and hold it from Thursday through Sunday.  We’re soliciting ideas about what sorts of activities the membership would like to experience in that extra day.  Please forward any ideas to me or the club president or any other board member.

08:20 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   via the DVR.

10:00 PM: Listened via Internet radio to the remainder of the Penguins hockey game.  Tonight, they shut out the Islanders, 5 to 0.

11:00 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of   Hawaii Five-0.

11:00 PM: We’re headed to bed.  Good night.  Come back for more tomorrow.

12:05 AM: The daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count rose this time, and currently stands at 806, up from 798 at last check.  The record high for this dimension remains at 1788.  The next goal: 2000.

09:00 AM: We’re up.

09:15 AM: Facebooked for several minutes. Friend count: 601 (unchanged). Fan count: 114 (unchanged).

01:30 PM: Was supposed to talk to our banker in regards to the new WPSBC Alumni Association   checking account.  We’re still in the midst of transferring all funds from the old account to the new and closing the old one.  However, the banker had a scheduling conflict and was unavailable to work with me today.  Hopefully I’ll be able to reach him tomorrow.

02:00 PM: Watched some additional coverage of the tenth anniversary of 9/11 via the DVR from CNN, CBS, and WJAC TV in Johnstown.

04:00 PM: Cooked up some t-bone steaks in the George Foreman grill for a lunch-supper hybrid meal with   [Emmy].  I also fried up some green peppers, mushrooms, and onions on the stove.  Delicious.

06:00 PM: I had planned on putting up more Christmas lights today.  However, the weather did not cooperate; it rained all day and was gray, damp, and cold to boot.  I think things are supposed to improve over the weekend.  I’ll get more of the light up then.

07:00 PM: Watched the 2011-11-14, 2011-11-15, and 2011-11-16 episodes of   The Young and the Restless   via the DVR.

08:30 PM: Watched the 2011-11-14, 2011-11-15, and 2011-11-16 episodes of   NBC’s Nightly News   broadcast via the DVR.

09:30 PM: [Emmy] watched the 2011-11-15 episode of    Unforgettable   via the DVR, while I perused the Internet, reading about sound reduction techniques for the home.

11:00 PM: We’re headed to bed.  Good night.  Come back for more tomorrow.

09:30 AM: I’m up.

10:15 AM: Facebooked a bit.  Friend count: 583 (up two).  Fan count: 111 (unchanged).

11:00 AM: Spackled a small hole on the door wall in [Emmy's] bathroom.  I made this hole a year or two ago, when I put up a hand towel hanger ring for her.  We discovered that we could not use this hole, as the electrical box on the other side of this wall prevented sufficient penetration for a strong mount.

11:50 AM: Heading out to lunch at our favorite Indian restaurant.  Back later.

01:15 PM: Walked   [Emmy]   back to her apartment.  Now, heading to WPSBC to meet [Tad].  We have some banking business to take care of today for the   WPSBC Alumni Association.

01:45 PM: [Tad] and I are leaving the school for the bank.  We’re walking.

02:00 PM: The meeting with the banker begins…

03:15 PM: As [Tad] is the current president of the   WPSBC Alumni Association,   he must be authorized to sign checks and conduct any other necessary business with the alumni association’s checking account.  However, due to missing information and inconsistent data that the bank had on file pertaining to our current checking account, the banker suggested that we start up a new business checking account.  We initiated that process today, and [Tad] has been fully authorized as a signer on the new account.

04:00 PM: [Tad] and I then walked to Dunkin’ Donuts for some coffee, to sort of, unwind and get out of business banking mode.  Then, with the rain beginning to fall, his wife came along in her car and graciously offered me a ride back to [Emmy's].  I indeed took her up on it.  I bade [Tad] and his wife [Morra] farewell.  I’ll see them tomorrow at the alumni fun day.

04:10 PM: Arrived at   [Emmy's].

06:00 PM: [Emmy] and I walked to CVS Pharmacy to pick up some WD-40 spray lubricant.  She’s got a kitchen faucet that squeaks obtrusively when actuated, and I hope that spraying the WD-40 underneath its coverings and into the inner mechanism will quiet it.

07:00 PM: We also stopped in at SuperCuts, where I purchased my monthly haircut for $10.

07:30 PM: We’re back at [Emmy's] apartment, preparing for   [Mentat's]   arrival in a couple hours.

09:00 PM: We made up   [Mentat's]   bed as we waited for him.

08:50 PM: [Mentat]   arrived as   [Emmy]   watched a new prime time show on CBS: A Gifted Man.

11:00 PM: We spent the rest of the evening catching up and syncing hard disk drives.  But we’re all tired though excited about the social at the school tomorrow.  So we’re heading to bed.  Good night.

12:05 AM: The daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count fell this time, and currently stands at 1070; down from 1081 at last check.  The record high for this dimension remains at 1788.  The next goal: 2000.

08:45 AM: I’m up.  It’s overcast outside, and temps in the  60s.

09:15 AM: Leaving now for walk 61 of 100 for 2011, to the south cemetery.  Back later.

10:20 AM: I’m back home.  For the past few days,

I’ve taking my podcast iPod on the walks with me, and thus, I’ve been catching up on the many Dr. Joy Browne episodes that I’m behind on.  Listened to all hours of the 2008-10-28, 2008-10-29, 2011-10-30, and 2011-10-31 shows.

10:30 AM: Sister Diane was waiting for me when I returned home from the walk.  She had planned some running around today and invited me to join her.  So, off I went.

11:00 AM: We drove to the recycling place in Pine Croft to drop off some of her rubbish and recyclables.

11:15 AM: Next, we drove to Oak Springs Winery, to pick up a few bottles with customized labels (birthday gifts for a few of sister Diane’s friends).

11:45 AM: Then, we dropped off some clothes she wanted to give to the Salvation Army.

11:50 AM: Our last stop on the trip was a visit to sister Jojo.

12:30 PM: We hung out on Jojo’s porch, talking of the coming fall season, end-of-summer flowers, and other light topics.

12:40 PM: I’m back home.

12:45 PM: Nap time.  Back later.

01:30 PM: I’m awake again.

01:35 PM: Heading out now to cut the grass, for the fifth time this year.  Is barely grew throughout July and most of August.  But over the last week or two, with all the rain we’ve been getting, the grass has turned green again and grown several inches.  It needs cut.  Back later.

04:00 PM: I’ve finished with the lawn tractor portion of the grass cutting.  The next time we have good weather, I’ll break out the weed whacker.

05:30 PM: Talked with [Mentat] to prepare for our get-together in September in Pittsburgh.

05:50 PM: Facebooked a bit.  Friend count: 564.  Fan count: 111.

06:20 PM: Watched the Hurricane Irene coverage on CNN.

06:20 PM: Leaving now for walk 62 of 100 in 2011, to the south cemetery again.  Back later.

06:40 PM: I’m back home, early.  Had to end the walk after just 20 minutes due to the appearance of threatening weather, including dark clouds from the south east, mildly forceful wind gusts, and rain.  I know we weren’t supposed to see any weather from the hurricane.  Yet those dark clouds appeared in the south east part of the sky, which would in fact be the direction of the hurricane.  So I think we did get a little something from it.

10:00 PM: Downloaded lots of music via Promo Only’s POOL application.  It’s getting harder to keep up with their updates, as they’ve begun publishing lots more music to this service.  But though I’m not really a DJ anymore, I’ll keep updating my music library just in case I get requests to play at occasional parties.

10:00 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   via the DVR.

11:00 PM: Talked with   [Emmy].  She’s been following the hurricane news coverage for much of the day too.

12:05 AM: Reviewed the daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count dropped again, and currently stands at 1341; down from 1374 the last time I checked.  The record high for this dimension remains at 1788.  The next goal: 2000.

12:10 AM: Bed time.  More tomorrow.  Good night.

08:05 AM: We’re up.

10:45 AM: Leaving now to visit Mom in the nursing home in Altoona.  Back later.

12:00 PM: We wheeled Mom down the street to a Mexican fast food restaurant for some taco salad, nachos, and cinnamon chips.  She really liked the different cuisine, saying that this lunch was a nice change from the Texas hot dogs we’ve been eating at most every visit for the past few months.

01:00 PM: Now, we’re taking Mom to get her hair set.  They get to do this twice a month at the nursing home.  Apparently, it’s a real morale booster.

01:45 PM: The butitcian just finished up with Mom.  So we’re heading outside to the little court yard to visit for an hour or so until it’s time for our ride to take us home.

02:45 PM: The van just arrived.  We said good-bye to Mom

03:15 PM: We’re back home.

03:30 PM: Nap time.  Back later.

05:00 PM: We’re awake again.

06:00 PM: Watched KDKA TV’s local news at 5:00 PM.

06:45 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   via the DVR.

06:50 PM: Leaving now for walk 48 of 100 around the Logan Valley Cemetery.  Back later.

08:00 PM: We’re back home.  Just about entirely cloudy and gray on our walk, but we noted no threat of rain.  The air was a bit brisk and breezy; carrying the unmistakable scent of the end of summer.

10:00 PM: Watched tonight’s episodes of   NBC’s Nightly News   via the DVR.

12:05 AM: Reviewed the daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count dropped, and now stands at 1553; down from 1564 the last time I checked.  The record high for this dimension remains at 1788.  The next goal: 2000.

09:25 AM: Posted the   WPSBC Alumni Association –> Pittsburgh Day Of Giving   piece for Ellen Goldfon.

10:15 AM: Followed up with our financial planner on yesterday’s meeting.  We’re still working out ways to pay for Mom’s long-term care.  In hindsight, we should have taken out that long-term health care policy when it was offered in 2005.  Darn!  But, hindsight’s always 20 / 20.  At the time, we deemed that policy too expensive, and we weren’t sure if we’d really ever use it.  But here we are.  Oh well.

11:00 AM: FAXed the power of attorney papers to one of Mom’s business vendors so we can make choices on her behalf.  That will require fourteen business days to take effect.

12:15 PM: Finished up this week’s load of white laundry.

01:00 PM: Talked with sister Diane, who talked with someone at Blair Senior Services about the financial side of long-term, skilled care for Mom.  There’s too much information to post here now.  But I will record it in an audio journal episode and perhaps post it in detail later.  However, the gist of the conversation was that there are many options to protect Mom’s estate from total depletion, and she told me of several avenues I can travel to minimize our out-of-pocket costs. Looks like the relevant information is available online at http://www.dpw.state.pa.us/ Cool!

02:55 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   on the DVR.

03:15 PM: Leaving now for [Mentat's] place.  I’m helping him repair a glider rocking chair.  It squeaks and grinds when you rock on it.  Back later.

04:30 PM: Found that [Mentat's] chair has some bad bearings (the sealed type).  However, I rotated and blew the dust out of them, and that silenced the grinding; at least for now.  Hopefully, that will last him until he can order some replacements once he gets to Ohio.

06:30 PM: We then went to U-Haul with nephew Garrett and his father to get the truck.  We got it, and a dozen blankets too, and [Mentat] has some rope and tape.  I think we’re good to go on all the moving supplies we need.

07:05 PM: I’m back home.  We’ll move [Mentat] in the coming days.

08:15 PM: Listening to the first regular season Penguins game with [Emmy], on the telephone.  They’re playing the Flyers.

10:00 PM: Well, it looked for twenty seconds near the end of the game that the Penguins would tie.  But they didn’t.  So, they lost to the Flyers.  A shame that they were beaten in the first regular season game at their new arena.  But, there’s the whole season minus one game to go.  I think if they play as they did in the pre season, they’ll do quite well overall this year.

11:00 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of CNN’s   AC 360   news show.

11:50 PM: Watched Letterman’s monologue, where he continued poking fun at Christine O’Donnell for her  “I’m not a witch”  ad.  That’s funny.  But, bed time now.  So good night, and I’ll have more to say tomorrow.  Later.

06:00 AM: I’m up.

09:00 AM: Got maps and driving directions printed out, that show how to get to [Mentat's] new dwelling in Ohio.  Nephew Garrett and myself will help [Mentat] move next month.

10:20 AM: [Tad] called to ask if I’ve sent out the $1000 payment on behalf of the   WPSBC Alumni Association,  to repair the braille embosser at WPSBC.  I told him that I have not yet because I’ve been so busy, and I wasn’t sure to whom to send it.  He’s finding that out for me and should call back in the next few days.  Then, I filled him in about Mom and found him very sympathetic.

12:00 PM: Replaced the batteries in both Mom’s and my cell phones.  Will this lengthen the talk time between charges?  We’ll use the phones for the next couple weeks to figure this out.  In the meantime, I’m holding off on recycling the old batteries.  However, as these are lithium ion batteries, they’re probably less chargeable now that they’re nearly three years old.  Batteries of this type only perform well for just two years or so after they’re made.  So they’re probably indeed bad.  We’ll see.

12:30 PM: Nap time.  Back later.

01:15 PM: Worked the   Water Heater Replacement: 2010    project.

05:00 PM: Worked the   Gutter Maintenance: 2010   project while the weather was still nice.

06:05 PM: Sister Jojo took Mom’s borrowed books back to the library.  But I need to call the library and make sure that there are no other books out.  Trying.  It’s busy.  So I’ll keep trying.

06:30 PM: Just talked with the librarian.  All Mom’s books have been returned except for one.  It’s called   The Proposal, and it’s by Lori Wick.  I’ll see if I can find that laying around here anywhere.

06:45 PM: Talked to sisters Christine and Diane.  Mom is being moved tomorrow to a physical therapy facility, and we had to be sure everyone in the family knows about the move and agrees that it’s best.  I think we agree on that.

07:15 PM: [Mentat] called.  He’s in the midst of arranging for a U-Haul truck for the move we’ll be doing for him in October.  However, we’re faced with the problem that many of the ten foot trucks (the size that [Mentat] needs) only have two seats.  But we need three.  So in order to guarantee that we’ll get a three-seater, we need to reserve a seventeen foot truck, which is way too big.  Plus, nephew Garrett has never driven a truck that big before.  so there’s a learning curve to negotiate as well.  Our best bet is the try for the ten, and if they can’t reserve one in Tyrone, then we’ll go to Altoona to get one.

07:20 PM: I’m cooking some cat fish fillets for supper, seasoned with basil, olive oil, and garlic.  Yum!

07:45 PM: I’ve finished that wonderful fish dinner with two courses: fish and strawberries for dessert.  Delicious, like I just knew it would be.

08:20 PM: Posted the    Mom’s Status: 2010-09-21   piece.

10:00 PM: {Emmy] and I chatted on the phone and listened to the third period of the first pre season Penguins game tonight. Yep fall is here.

10:30 PM: Heard from Mom’s friend Holly.  She’s offering to take me shopping on Friday as well as to visit Mom.  Yes ma’am.  That’s sweet.

11:30 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   on the DVR.

11:50 PM: Signing off for tonight.  More tomorrow.  Take care.

Log

07:00 AM: We’re all up. [Ann] again came through all the dorm halls just now, loudly proclaiming that it’s time to get up.  This time, she had a strap of bells that she shook loudly.  I slept better overnight; despite Sasquatch’s snoring.  I really must have been tired.

07:45 AM: Now heading to breakfast with [Emmy] and [Mentat].

08:30 AM: Counting up the cash and checks we took in over the weekend.  Filled out deposit slip to be taken to the bank on Monday.

09:15 AM: We socialized a little more with friends in the WPSBC lobby, and checked our rooms for articles we might have left behind.  None found.

10:00 AM: Now, [Emmy], [Mentat], and I are heading back to [Emmy's] place.

12:00 PM: [Mentat] and I said goodbye to [Emmy] and caught a taxi to the train station.

01:00 PM: We boarded the eastbound train for Altoona and Tyrone.

03:50 PM: We reached Altoona, on time, and I said goodbye to [Mentat].  Sister Christine came by to pick me up and then, on to the hospital to visit Mom.

06:00 PM: We visited Mom for an hour or so.  She’s not doing very well today.  She has a high fever.  She appears to have contracted some sort of infection since yesterday.  She slept mostly but appeared very uncomfortable.

09:30 PM: Talked with [Emmy] for a shorter-than-usual time, as we just spent most of the weekend together and because I’m just so tired tonight.

10:00 PM: Unpacked my suitcase from this weekend and watched various shows on TV.  I’m beat; as is the usual case after a   WPSBC Alumni Association   convention.  So I’m off to bed.  Enjoy the rest of your evening, and I’ll write more tomorrow.
