09:15 AM: We’re all up.

12:00 PM: [Mentat], [Emmy], and I hung out at her apartment listening to music on her computer, eating breakfast, and getting ready for the big weekend at the   WPSBC Alumni Association   convention.  We’re heading to our favorite Indian restaurant shortly for lunch, before going on to the school.

01:00 PM: Circled around to CVS Pharmacy for a   mini shopping trip.

01:45 PM: Lunch is done and we’re all pleasantly full.  This meal should last us until the cook-out at WPSBC tonight.

02:15 PM: We’ve arrived at WPSBC.  I’ve been asked to work the registration desk; greeting members and guests as they arrive, and telling them their dorm room assignments.

06:00 PM: The registration phase of the convention is now complete.  So, we’re going to the next part; the orientation meeting.  You’d think that as former students, we’d not require orientation.  However, the school has undergone so many changes over the years, and continues to do so at this very moment.  So in this gathering, the staff informs us of the alterations in building layout, campus rules, and such, who to contact in case of emergencies, where the emergency phones are located, and so on.  Unfortunately, access to the basement, second, and third floors is denied this weekend, as almost all areas in the Mary Schenley building are being renovated; heating and air conditioning upgrades.

The school’s superintendent addressed us as well and discussed the renovations also going on in the old lower school.  They’ve removed the tiles from the walls and floors in order to “tone down” the “institutional” look, to favor a more “family room at home” appearance.  This is an effort, as he explained, to make the parents who must send their special needs children to the school for a time, perceive the school as more of a home-style environment; one that more closely resembles their own family rooms at home.

Finally, our president supplied the schedule of activities for the weekend and bade us all to have a great time.

06:45 PM: The orientation meeting is now complete, and we’re heading for what used to be the boys side playground area for the cook-out meal.

08:00 PM: The weather cooperated during the picnic style meal which consisted of hamburgers, hot dogs, watermelon, and brownies.  The temperatures were slightly warmer this time than what I remember them being in past conventions; though I still had to don my sweatshirt as the meal progressed as the temperatures fell to the low seventies as the evening progressed.

After my big Indian lunch earlier, I limited myself to two hamburgers and no hot dogs.  But that was still enough to capture the cook out picnic essence which has come to define Friday nights at these get-togethers.

09:00 PM: During the meal and for a few hours afterwards (until 11:15 or so), a Karaoke DJ entertained us.  Several of the more gutsy members sang their favorite songs to us all.  I was not so fearless however; as I declined an invitation to sing Jim Croce’s hit  Bad Bad Leroy Brown.  Hey, I know my limits.  :-)

09:30 PM: I paid the DJ, then return to my table with [Ron], [Emmy]. and others, while [Mentat] played darts inside.

02:00 AM: Well, I couldn’t tear myself away from the good conversation and fellowship until now.  As we must be up again by 8:00 AM for breakfast, I’m certainly going to pay for staying up so late tomorrow.  I may have to rely on diet Pepsi with caffeine intact to get me through the upcoming business meeting and the Saturday afternoon social hours.  But as hard as I try, it’s nearly impossible to maintain a healthful sleeping schedule with all this wonderful reminiscing and debating current affairs going on.

02:15 AM: I just entered the dorm and, well, it looks like I might not sleep very well.  A roommate is snoring, lumbering,  and growling like Sasquatch.  He appears to suffer from severe sleep apnea; going through cycles of slow, deep breathing that gradually increase in volume and breaths per minute until a loud cresendo occurs, when he stops breathing altogether for ten to fifteen seconds, wakes up, noisily shifts position in his bed, then breathes deeply again as the whole process begins anew.  But hopefully these foam earplugs I borrowed from [Emmy] will attenuate that racket enough to allow me to doze off and acquire at least a few hours of undisturbed shuteye.  Good night.

08:30 AM: I’m up.

09:00 AM: Facebooked and blogged.  Friend count: 280.  Facebook Page fan count: 52.

11:55 AM: Talked with [Emmy].  Apparently she keeps receiving bills from her former telephone and Internet provider; though she cancelled her subscription with them back in March, 2010.  I’ll look over her papers on this shortly, and see if we can figure what’s going on.

12:00 PM: Packing for trip to the   WPSBC Alumni Association   convention is done.

01:00 PM: Just met with our financial planner.  Looking into a reverse mortgage.

01:20 PM: Watched the 2010-07-11 episode of   CBS’s Face The Nation   news show on the DVR.

02:15 PM: Cooked a bottom round steak, mushrooms, and onions for lunch with fresh cucumbers and dressing.  Yum!

03:55 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   on the DVR.

04:15 PM: [Mentat's] sister just came.  She’s driving me to the Amtrak train station in Tyrone, where I’ll board the west-bound train to Pittsburgh and the   WPSBC Alumni Association   convention this weekend.  I’ll return home early should Mom’s condition degrade.  But she seems relatively stable at the moment and we have noted some slight improvements even.  So I believe that she’ll be alright while I’m gone.

04:55 PM: We just climbed onto the train and got seats together.  I sat closest to the window this time; I enjoy those ever-changing sights whizzing by; everything to farms and forests to city lights and roads and buildings taller than the trees.  Our coach is well air-conditioned as it usually is.

06:30 PM: We’ve passed Johnstown and so far, we’ve gabbed the whole trip about everything from [Mentat's] upcoming move to Ohio to my plans to buy Mom’s house.  It’s nice chatting with [Mentat].   I wish we did it more.  But if we did that, it might lose some of its appeal.  So maybe I don’t wish this.  I don’t know.  :-)

08:30 PM: I’m here a [Emmy's] now.  [Mentat] and I rode the train over and now we’re just gabbing while getting ready to head to Pizza Pronto for supper.

10:00 PM: We’re back at [Emmy's].  Mmmmm.  The pizza was spectacular.  Now we’re watching   CNN’s AC 360   news show and whipping up a bowl of raspberry cream cheese Jello.  I brought three Corelleware bowls with me so [Emmy] can make this Jello dish by herself.  She bought Jello and cream cheese at her shopping trip earlier today.

11:45 PM: After watching   KDKA TV’s Local News at 11:00 PM, we played some music on [Emmy's] computer from the group   Shiny Toy Guns; their version of the  Major Tom   song, originally done by   Peter Schilling.  We found that they also did a remake of  Blue Oyster Cult‘s hit   I’m Burnin’ For You.  Both remakes we like.  Both of these make great repeater songs.

12:00 AM: We’re heading to bed now that I’ve got blankets laid out on [Emmy's] living room floor for she and I, and she’s put new sheets on her bed for [Mentat].  So enjoy your night and I’ll write more as time permits tomorrow and over the weekend.  Good night.

07:15 AM: I’m up. No doctors appointments today but I think I just woke up early because it’s so pretty outside and I did get to bed relatively early last night.  So, here we go with another day…

08:20 AM: Read a bit more of the  Frankenstein   book overnight.

10:10 AM: Added 700 words to the   Be Yourself   section of the   How to Attract Women   post on the   Tom’s Love Quest   blog.

11:45 AM: Headed to sister Christine’s for swimming today.  Back later.

12:10 PM: On the way over, I stopped at Sheets for a mini   shopping trip   for lunch items.

06:30 PM: Worked the   Laptop Shuts Off: 2010-07-15    project.

06:35 PM: Ordered a round-trip train ticket to Pittsburgh for the   WPSBC Alumni Association   convention in August.  Total cost: $32.30.

07:00 PM: We’re home.  Wonderful afternoon.   The sun was neither too hot nor bright and the temperatures were just right; in the mid eighties.  We listened to some 1960s tunes, floated around in the pool, basked in the hot tub, and enjoyed some Papa John’s pizza.  I also had a chicken sub from Sheetz.  I had to challenge nephew Garrett on his strong support of the death penalty a little, and some comments were made with a disparaging air about immigrants that we had to nip in the bud.  That made for a slightly charged atmosphere for a little while.  But we all left the gathering just as we entered it this morning, as friends, and I think people definitely learned a thing or two from the conversations.  That’s good.

09:00 PM: Watched   CNN’s Rick’s List In Prime Time   news show.  So far, so good.  I think Rick will do quite well in prime time; just what the news-seeking audience needs to balance out the opinion-casting of Bill O’Reilly and Fox News.  Boy, Fox sure screwed up that Shirley Sherrod thing, didn’t they?

10:00 PM: I must schedule a dentist appointment tomorrow.  I’ve got some pain and sensitivity to resolve.

10:15 PM: Facebooked and blogged since we finished viewing   Rick’s List.   Now, we’re off to watch   The Young and the Restless.

11:00 PM: All TV viewing done for today.  Bed time now.  So check back in  here tomorrow for more drivel.  :-)   Good night.

08:15 AM: I’m up. We’re up early because [Emmy] has a podiatrist appointment later this morning to investigate some chronic pain in her arches.  We’re thinking that she just needs to wear better shoes.  But the doctor will hopefully advise us for sure.

08:20 AM: Read more of the  Frankenstein   book overnight.

09:30 AM: A computer customer called to say that she’s having problems restoring her QuickBooks backup and wants my help.  So I told her I’d get back to her this afternoon, after we get back from [Emmy's] foot appointment.

10:05 AM: Leaving now for [Emmy's] podiatrist appointment.  Back later.

11:30 AM: The doctor examined [Emmy] and made the following suggestions to correct her aching arches:

  • Try insole supports — we bought a pair from him for $20.  He says to wear these for just an hour or so each day to start, and then to gradually work this up to where she’s using them full-time.
  • Buy better shoes.  We have been purchasing the cheaper, off-brand varieties for under $30 a pair.  Now, we’ll try Nike and Rebok.
  • Replace primary pair of shoes every six months.  She had been wearing hers for over a year.

12:40 PM: Grabbed lunch at Original Italian Pizza in Tyrone, PA.  Yum.

12:55 PM: We’re back home again, and taking an after-lunch nap.

01:00 PM: Mixed up a batch of strawberry-flavored cream cheese Jello.  My only complaint about these potions is that they take too long to harden.  Otherwise, they’re delicious.

01:30 PM: Called the customer with the QuickBooks problem back.  Apparently, she figured it out.  Nice.

02:30 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   on the DVR.  Now, I’m heading outside to work in the yard.

08:00 PM: Worked the   Lawn Maintenance: 2010   project.  Cut the mow-able parts with the lawn tractor.

09:00 PM: Watched Campbell Brown’s last newscast on CNN.  Sorry to see her go.  She’ll be missed.

11:00 PM: Blogged a bit, made another bowl of sugar-free Jello; this time, cherry, and re read some of the   Frankenstein  book.  [Emmy] listened along with me for this reading, up through letter 2.

11:35 PM: Watched   KDKA TV’s Local News at 11:00 PM.  Now, we’re heading to bed.  So sweet dreams and sleep well.  I’ll continue this story tomorrow.

08:15 AM: I’m up.

09:45 PM: Added the February through March, 2010 issues of Promo Only’s Country Radio music series to my DJ library.

10:20 AM: Sent in my dues and fees for the upcoming   WPSBC Alumni Association   convention this August.

10:45 AM: Ordered this week’s batch of prescription meds that Mom getting low on.  We’ll pick them up sometime in the next few days.

02:15 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   on the DVR.

03:15 PM: Added the April through June, 2010 issues of Promo Only’s Country Radio music series to my DJ library.  Now, it’s nap time.

05:45 PM: I’m back up again.

07:55 PM: Talked to   [Ron]  just now.  He’s going to camp and I was just telling him how much I was going to miss being there with him and the crew.  He and a few others are definitely the high points of camp.  Perhaps we’ll go next year but I’m glad we took this year off.

08:30 PM: [Mentat] called to confirm about tomorrow, and to ride me for not yet sending in my alumni convention check.

09:15 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   on the DVR.

09:30 PM: Bleached my sheets and pillow cases tonight, in preps for [Mentat's] visit tomorrow.  They came out looking much whiter than is typical; probably because I used two cups of bleach instead of my usual one cup.  Plus, I let them soak for six hours in very warm water, and I only filled up the washer with just enough water to cover them (about a half-tub full).  I’ll have to remember this recipe the next time I do them.

11:20 PM: Talked with [Emmy].  Told her that I spoke with [Ron] earlier about camp.    She asked about him and enjoyed hearing that he’s really looking forward to attending next week.

12:40 AM: Put the clean sheets and pillow cases back on my bed and iPodded for a little while.  Repeater songs today include:

  • Dream Baby – Glenn Campbell
  • Una Paloma Blanka – George Baker Selection
  • I Like It [With Rap] – Enrique Iglesias with Pitbull
  • The Things We Do For Love – 10cc
  • Dynamite – Taio Cruz
  • Telephone – Lady Gaga
  • Turn Me On – Kevin Lyttle
  • Your Love Is My Drug – Ke$ha
  • No Sugar Tonight – The Guess Who
  • Hooray For Hazel – Tommy Roe

They’re coming out with some highly energizing music these days.

01:15 AM: Watched a bit of CNN’s AC 360 but now, I’m done for the day.  So good night, and I’ll be ready for more of life as soon as I get some rest.  :-)   Sweet dreams.

02:55 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   on the DVR.  Lilly, in open court, chose not to force Mac to give the amniotic fluid from Kane’s and Lilly’s babies.

06:30 PM: Watched yesterday’s and today’s episodes of  Dr. Phil;  both reruns, but good enough that they were worth seeing a second time.

12:52 PM: Is Max and Erma’s still on Lyons Road (or just off of it)? It’s been years since I’ve visited [the south Dayton area, though I lived there for over nine years].

03:24 PM: Hey Mel. How’s it going? You ready to return to camp yet? We miss you. It’s not been the same without you.

05:23 PM: Hey there, [Ann]. It’s been a while. Are you attending the alumni convention this summer? I’ll be there. I must give my treasurer’s report after all. ;-)

05:32 PM: Wished niece Catie good luck at her recital performance later this evening.

08:03 PM: Of course. :-) So the question becomes: What’s your true color of your hair? This, or the blonde?

08:15 PM: Cool! The color you’ve chosen  works well for you.

10:59 PM: I enjoyed a light yet very warm day of activity. He wrote around 1200 words, iPodded at his pavilion, went grocery shopping, visited sisters, caught up on email, ate handfuls of mulberries which are just now coming into season, admined his blog sites and was thrilled at the continued increases in bandwidth, and tinkered… with ways of getting his documents indexed faster by search engines. No solution for that found however. :-(

11:13 PM: [Commenting on a picture taken of the Israeli sea side that a friend posted.] Hmmm. No wonder both the Palestinians and Israelis fight so hard to stay there. This is beautiful.

08:45 AM: I’m up.

09:15 AM: Resolved an URL-not-found error on the   WPSBC Alumni Association   web site that was reported by Google.  This was a  MONTH  url that had no posts in it.  Not sure why the site map generator program was generating this URL.  I tried rebuilding the site map.  But the offending URL still appeared.  So I ended up just adding a post for that month; a place-holder more than anything, and all is well now.

09:45 AM: Facebooked.  Up to 268 friends now, and that’s in spite of a couple that DE-friended me.  Not sure why they did,  Sometimes, they just do it for apparently no reason; maybe they decided that I’m too old or that they didn’t like the general tone of my posts.  I wasn’t hostile or negative.  I’ve just been posting about what I’m doing with my days, these days. But perhaps they found this journal-style reporting boring after a while.  Who knows?  But with hundreds of millions of other people on Facebook to choose from, I’ll give these naysayers no further thought.  :-)

09:50 AM: Now I’m off to fill Mom’s med trays.  Back later.

10:35 AM: Finished replenishing Mom’s med trays.  This will give her enough easily-accessible pills for the next three weeks.

10:35 AM: Also, I watched last night’s episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   on the DVR as I dolled out the meds.   Hmmmm.  Looks like the DVR did not record NBC’s Meet The Press   today.  There’s a rodeo or something on that channel right now.  Darn!  I so hate the pre-empting of shows I like, with those I couldn’t care less about.  GRIPE!

01:30 PM: Got six pages of notes from audio journal episode   AJE-2010-05-31-21-52.  Should be good fodder for an upoming   Tom’s Love Quest   post.

02:05 PM: Whipped up another batch of cream cheese sugar-free Jello.  This time, I went with orange.

03:50 PM: Left [Jack] a birthday greeting on his voice mail, and talked with [Emmy] for twenty minutes.

05:00 PM: Nap time.

06:00 PM: Nap’s over.

08:00 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   on the DVR.  Strange.  The DVR failed to record   CBS’s 60 Minutes.  Well, it recorded, but an hour late for some reason.

10:30 PM: Chatted with [Emmy] on the phone.  I caught her napping when I called.  But she came fully awake quickly and we had a nice talk.

01:10 AM: iPodded and Facebooked.  Found several more work buddies and friended them, while listening to bands like Lake, Led Zepplin, and Love Unlimited Orchestra.  Music and writing generally go together real well.

01:15 AM: Bed, bed, now here I come.   So I’m out of here for this evening.  Take care, and do check back for more of this continuing story tomorrow.  Good night.

04:30 AM: I’m up. briefly, to read a little.

08:30 AM: My weight did not change from yesterday.  It’s still 173.5 Lbs.    See   here   for a summary of the progress on this goal so far in 2010.

08:35 AM: Began the book:  The Adventures of Pinocchio   overnight.

09:30 AM: Got nephew Garrett started on the   Basement Cleanup: 2010   project.

11:00 AM: Posted the   Alumni Bulletin: 2009   piece to the   WPSBC Alumni Association   web site.  Some extensive editing was required to get it to display in a pleasing manner.  But that’s complete and appears to have been well worth the effort.

01:30 PM: Called our local pharmacy and ordered four medicine refills for Mom.

03:40 PM: Recorded audio journal episode: AJE-2010-04-12-15-16.

04:30 PM: Skipped today’s   Dr. Phil  episode; it’s the Dr. Phil family again.

05:20 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless on the DVR.  Turns out that Sarah is Sheila’s sister, and she’s holding Lauren to avenge Sheila’s death; Lauren shot Sheila several years back.  It appears that Sarah is also Kevin and Daisy’s mom, although Kevin said today that Sheila is not their mother.  Well, that seems true enough.  But did he mean Sarah?  Hmmmm.  Meanwhile, the police are searching the homes of all who held Adam in the Abbott cabin, looking for clues to who killed Adam.

07:00 PM: There appears to be a brush fire in progress on the west side of Brush Mountain.  So some of us neighbors congregated in the lot just south of here to watch.  An airplane circled; repeatedly dropping flame retardant.  Some runs he would not drop the load and we figured that on these passes, he decided that he was either too high or too low, or that the wind was blowing too much.

07:15 PM: [Emmy] called to say that she’s under the weather with stomach pains.  I’ll check back later to see how she’s doing.
